Why We Love Victoria Falls

Boating on the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls Tours & Excursions

The Victoria Falls offers a dramatic scenic contrast and change of pace after your safari experience. Especially when the Zambezi River is in full flow from March to July. Indeed, at that time, over a mile of unbroken surging water plunges into the Zambezi gorge below.

Victoria Falls safari holidays revolve around three separate scenic delights: soak up the Falls, experience the mighty Zambezi River, and head out on safari in the Zambezi National Park—all in one trip.

Victoria Falls Safari Options: Hotels, Tours & Extensions

Victoria Falls town is also the beating heart of Zimbabwe’s adventure scene. Beyond its world-famous waterfall, the town is safe, lively, and packed with hotels, restaurants, and thrilling activities—whether you’re chasing spray rainbows, sunset cruises, or a shot of adrenaline on the Zambezi.

There’s an array of activities on offer from walking tours of the falls to adventure activities like bungee jumping, gorge swinging or the flying fox and ziplining. Helicopter trips or microlight flights over the falls are incredible. Whist the Victoria Falls Canopy tour is a network of slides, trails and rope bridges within the canopy of the Zambezi Gorge forest with spectacular views to Victoria Falls bridge and the rapids below.

White water rafting - Victoria Falls Safari Holidays

Towards the end of the dry season (Mid-September to December), the best views are from the Zimbabwe side. (As the Zambian side dries up considerably.)

Plus, it’s just over an hour to Chobe National Park in Botswana and easy to get to Hwange National Park to the south - by road or air.

Tip: Stay 3 nights

Stay three nights for the full experience—view the Falls, cruise the river, give yourself time to relax and rewind after your safari. With spare time to fit in an optional activity or two.

This is especially the case if you stay at one of the riverside safari lodges just outside Victoria Falls, as you can also enjoy game drives in the Zambezi National Park.

Review of Victoria Falls Safari Options

Quite a few of our safaris in South Africa, Botswana and of course Zimbabwe include 2-3 nights in Victoria Falls – see our tour selection below.

Frequently Asked Questions?

What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls town?

April to July offers peak water flow for dramatic views (but expect plenty of spray!). June to mid-August is perfect for photography and game viewing. Late August to December, the Falls are drier, but the Zimbabwe side still has an impressive flow of water. Plus, more adventure activities become accessible.

Can I walk to the Falls from my hotel?

Most hotels and guesthouses in Victoria Falls town are within easy walking distance of the Falls’ main entrance, shops, and restaurants. Some are really close whilst others are a 10-15 minute walk. But many hotels offer complimentary transfers to the Falls if they are further away.

Why We Love It

  • Endless activities, from classic walking tours of the Falls to bungee jumping, ziplining, or scenic flights.
  • Mighty Zambezi River itself has two characters. The gentle river above is perfect for sunset boat cruises and game viewing by canoe, whilst below the Falls is more adventurous for the adrenalin rush of white-water rafting.
  • Zambezi National Park is great for 4x4 game drives, horse ridging, walking safaris & fishing.
  • Family-friendly options like the Victoria Falls Canopy Tour.
  • Easy day trips to Chobe in Botswana or 2-3 night safaris to Hwange National Park.

When to visit Victoria Falls

Summer in Victoria Falls

This is not the ideal time for Victoria Falls, especially in November & December, as the flow of water over the Victoria Falls is low. However the Zimbabwe side is the better side to see the Falls if you do visit then. Early summer is also the time that you can visit Livingstone Island (on the Zambian side) Plus, as the summer rains continue, the flow over the Victoria Falls increases dramatically.

Peak Flow over the Victoria Falls

The flow of water over the Victoria Falls is at its maximum which means exciting viewing experiences but not great photos as your camera would get soaked! In April the flow may be so great that you almost don’t get to see the full majesty of the Falls as the mist from the spray is all-pervasive. This problem gradually eases during May. Note that the paths around the Falls will be very slippery and some sections are marked “at your own risk”!

Peak safari time

Traditionally this is the best time to see the Victoria Falls. The flow of water is still strong, but the spray is less, so that you can see the Falls and thus it is easier to photograph.

Lower flow of Water, Livingstone Island opens

Temperatures heat up quickly in September and October prior to the start of the summer rains. The flow of water over the Victoria Falls starts becoming noticeably less as the dry season continues. But it is still strong on the Zimbabwe side. However somewhere in August, Livingstone Island (on the Zambian side) opens for visitors for the drier months of the year.
