Overview

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve - wild dog attacking buffalo

The Moremi Game Reserve is slightly elevated, protected tribal land on the eastern boundary of the Okavango Delta. The Moremi combines permanent waterways, seasonal floodplains, lagoons, mopane woodland and open grasslands to create one remarkably diverse landscape. The result is some of the finest wildlife viewing anywhere in Africa.

The Moremi lies where the vast Kalahari grasslands meets the waters of the Okavango delta. Here there are no fences. Vast herds of elephant migrate from the Kalahari grasslands in search of water as the dry season progresses. Resident species in the Moremi Game Reserve include lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, kudu, lechwe, sable and roan antelope. Chief’s Island, the largest island in the Okavango Delta, lies within the Moremi. While much of the island is occupied by private concessions such as Mombo and Chief’s Camp, it remains one of Botswana's most amazing wildlife areas.

Many visitors combine a stay in Moremi with a camp in one of the Delta's private concessions. Together they offer the perfect introduction to Botswana: outstanding game drives in Moremi alongside boating, mokoro excursions and walking safaris elsewhere in the Delta.

We include the camps in the Khwai Game Reserve just to the north of the Moremi because of their focus is also on game drives (land-based safari activities).

We recommend that you combine a 2-3 night stay at a Moremi or Khwai camp with a stay at one of the water-based or seasonal Okavango delta lodges in a private concession.

Land-based game-viewing?

Many people have heard of staying at a ‘land’ or a ‘water’ camp when in the Okavango. Many of the Moremi camps would be considered ‘land’ camps as they focus on 4x4 game drives. (However some of the Moremi camps do offer boating activities, year round or during the seasonal flood.)

All the Moremi camps are on their own private concessions But they do also drive in the public areas of the park. So you should expect to see other vehicles on your game drives. However the quality of the game-viewing in the Moremi more than makes up for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Moremi Game Reserve better than Chobe?

The two offer different experiences. Moremi is celebrated for its varied habitats and outstanding predator sightings, while Chobe is famous for its enormous elephant herds and river safaris. Many visitors combine both.

How many nights should I spend in Moremi?

We recommend at least three nights to fully appreciate the reserve and combine several game drives in different areas.

Can I combine Moremi with a water-based safari?

Absolutely. This is our favourite combination, allowing you to experience Moremi's exceptional game drives alongside boating, mokoro excursions and walking safaris in the Okavango's private concessions.
