Walking Safaris in Zambia

Walking Safaris in Zambia

Walking safaris were pioneered in South Luangwa National Park and it still sets the pace. However you can also enjoy safaris on foot in the Lower Zambezi, North Luangwa and Kafue as well. You can opt to do morning bush walks from the camp or take a walking safari of several days. Morning bush walks usually last 3-4 hours with a light breakfast in the bush. These are not arduous but rather gentle explorations of the bush, giving you the opportunity to observe the game at close quarters and gain fascinating insights into the ways of the wild - a magical experience. Typically you focus on the smaller wildlife, the birds, the plants and their local medicinal uses and you’ll find yourself tracking spoor to identify different animals. Sometimes you’ll also encounter larger wildlife so your guide is always alert and ready. However for me the attraction lies in the overwhelming sense of being an active part of the bush and not just viewing it from a stationary vehicle. Many of our clients stay at bush camps which specialise in walking safaris such as Bilingmungwe or Nsefu in the South Luangwa or Old Mondoro in the Lower Zambezi. Ideally you split your time between two or three of these bush camps to enjoy the different terrain (which attracts diverse wildlife) and you walk from one camp to another (with your bag taken by vehicle so that it’s waiting for you on arrival.) The final option is to take a walking safari of several days staying in fly camps and walking each day, accompanied by some of the finest guides in Africa. Robin Pope Safaris offer several such mobile safaris through the dry season with set departure dates. These are extremely popular and sell out rapidly so contact us to discuss your interests. If you’re not sure whether you’d enjoy a walking safari, hedge your bets and ask us to recommend camps that offer a combination of game drives and walking.
