Choosing from honeymoon destinations in Africa is a bit like picking your first dance song: everyone has an opinion, there’s no wrong answer, and the timing matters more than you think.
When couples ask us where they should go, one of our first questions is usually:
When are you travelling?
Africa is enormous, with very different climates across Southern Africa, East Africa and the Indian Ocean. A destination that is perfect for a July honeymoon may be far less appealing in January. And vice versa.
The good news is that there is nearly always somewhere within our Africa destinations that works beautifully.
But with so many game reserves, beaches, and islands to choose from, it can also feel overwhelming.
So rather than starting with a list of the “best” honeymoon destinations in Africa, we think it makes more sense to start with your month of travel.
That’s why we’ve put together our subjective, but very well-informed guide to our favourite Africa honeymoon destinations by season.
This article gives you our broad recommendations. Weather is never entirely predictable, and some destinations work outside their supposed ”ideal” seasons. But it should help you narrow down the possibilities before you disappear down another internet research rabbit hole.
African Honeymoons at a Glance
When Are You Travelling?
Some of Our Favourite Options
January-February
South Africa (Cape), Tanzania & Zanzibar, Seychelles
March – May
South Africa, Mozambique, Seychelles, Southern African safari as the dry season approaches (Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia)
June – August
Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar, KwaZulu-Natal & Lake Malawi
September – October
Excellent safari conditions across much of Southern & East Africa including South Africa (Kruger, KZN), Namibia
November – December
South Africa (Cape), green-season safari options, parts of East Africa and selected Indian Ocean islands
But there is quite a bit more nuance behind that table.
For example a South Africa safari in the Kruger is perfect between June and August but the Cape is not at its best. But if you focus more on the northern part of the country, such as KwaZulu Natal, you can have perfect honeymoon weather.
Where to Honeymoon in Africa in January & February
South Africa
If you’re escaping a northern-hemisphere winter, South Africa is one of our first choices.
Think endless summer: hot and sunny. Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route , offer long sunny days, restaurants spilling outdoors and excellent conditions for road trips through the Cape.
You can add safari as well. The Greater Kruger region is in its green season, so the bush is lush and game viewing feels different from the dry winter months. It may not be the textbook “dry season safari”, but there is plenty of wildlife around and this can be a beautiful time of year.
Alternatively you can opt for an Eastern Cape safari, an easy continuation from the Garden Route.
South Africa’s own glorious coastline is at its best at this time of year, so you can end with a beach stay very easily.
A classic honeymoon could combine:
Cape Town + Winelands + Safari. or continue to the Whale Coast and the Garden Route
Look at green season Botswana & Victoria Falls to take advantage of the best weather in the Cape, and enjoy great seasonal offers on safari.
Cape Town, Botswana and Victoria Falls
Tanzania & Zanzibar
January and February can also work extremely well for Tanzania.
This is an interesting time in the southern Serengeti, particularly around the wildebeest calving period. Combine it with Zanzibar and you have a very strong safari-and-beach honeymoon.
Catch the Wildebeest Migration in the southern Serengeti
Enjoy the small camps of the Selous & Ruaha in Southern Tanzania
Perhaps check out Gorilla tracking in Uganda
Just remember that the Great Migration is a moving natural phenomenon rather than a scheduled performance. We can tell you where the herds are usually found at a particular time of year, but nobody can guarantee exactly what they will be doing.
What about the Indian Ocean Islands?
The Seychelles can work year-round, although January and February tend to be warmer, more humid and wetter.
But be aware: Madagascar, Mozambique and Mauritius are also hot at this time of year, but this falls within the period when tropical storms and cyclones are more of a consideration from mid-January to mid-March. So we would typically not recommend it.
Good choices for January–February: South Africa • Tanzania • Zanzibar • Seychelles
Honeymoon Destinations in Africa – from March to May
This is an interesting shoulder-season period because conditions are changing across the continent.
Head south to dodge East Africa’s “long rains” (between mid-March and May). Instead, think warm Indian Ocean waters in Mozambique, Mauritius or the Seychelles, or the palm-fringed northern KwaZulu-Natal coast for warm ocean swimming.
South Africa remains very strong
March and April are lovely months in much of South Africa.
Cape Town and the Winelands are moving into autumn, but days can still be warm and settled. The summer crowds start to disappear, while safari areas further north become drier.
By May, game viewing in Southern Africa is beginning to move towards its dry-season pattern.
For honeymooners wanting a broad mixture of Cape Town, wine country, scenery and safari, this can be an excellent time to travel.
Add in Victoria Falls as the summer progresses (February/March) as the water levels start to surge.
It’s also a clever time for safari in Southern Africa from March onwards: the rains have passed, landscapes are lush, and the peak-season prices haven’t yet kicked in.
As you move later into autumn, Mozambique becomes increasingly appealing.
This is a particularly good pairing with safari in South Africa, especially if you want a smaller, more intimate beach lodge.
A honeymoon combining Cape Town + Kruger + Mozambique can work very well at this time of year.
From roughly mid-March through April and May, much of East Africa experiences its main rainy season.
That doesn’t mean travel is impossible. Indeed, some safari areas are wonderfully quiet and prices can be attractive.
But for a honeymoon, when most couples don’t want to gamble unnecessarily with weather, we would usually look carefully at the alternatives before recommending Kenya, Tanzania or Zanzibar in the heart of the long rains.
Seychelles
April and May are transition months in the Seychelles and can be particularly appealing, with warm temperatures and generally calmer seas.
Good choices for March–May: South Africa • Mozambique • Southern African safari later in the season • Seychelles

Where to Honeymoon in Africa from June to August
Now we are firmly into classic safari season across much of Africa.
If wildlife is one of your main honeymoon priorities, this is a wonderful time to travel.
It’s prime time for Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Evenings in South Africa are chilly enough to justify copious Amarula around the campfire: a liqueur made from the Marula fruit, of which elephant are also fond.
Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe
The dry season is underway in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Wildlife becomes increasingly concentrated around permanent water, vegetation thins and safari conditions improve as the season progresses.
Botswana is superb at this time of year, although it is also one of Africa’s more expensive safari destinations with peak season prices now starting in June or even earlier.
Zambia and Zimbabwe both offers a different style: smaller camps, walking safaris, boating and canoeing in areas such as the Mana Pools and Lower Zambezi. Peak season usually only kicks in from July onwards.
And one of our favourite, less-obvious honeymoon combinations is:
Zambia & Lake Malawi for a unique take on bush and beach
You get a proper safari in Zambia followed by several days beside clear freshwater beaches on Lake Malawi – a lovely alternative to the conventional Indian Ocean resort.
East Africa is also moving into its peak safari season. This is an excellent time for safari in Tanzania and Kenya, including the Serengeti and Masai Mara.
As the season progresses, the Great Migration generally moves northwards, but we would choose your safari area according to your actual travel dates rather than simply chasing a famous photograph of a river crossing.
Both countries also offer excellent beach combinations: Tanzania & Zanzibar is one of Africa’s easiest classic safari-and-beach honeymoons.
Kenya with its Kenyan Coast works very well if you want an uncomplicated beach extension, while Kenya plus Seychelles gives you a more luxurious island finale.
This is the time to:
Catch the Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti. — our Romantic Serengeti & Zanzibar package is designed for this very season.”
Enjoy the small camps of the Selous & Ruaha in Southern Tanzania
Perhaps check out Gorilla tracking in Uganda
South Africa in winter
Winter is an excellent time for safari around the Greater Kruger or northern KwaZulu Natal. (It can be a little chilly in other areas at this time.)
Cape Town, however, is in its cooler, wetter season.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t include it – plenty of our clients do – but we wouldn’t sell Cape Town in July as a guaranteed sunshine destination.
If warm weather and beach time matter more, look towards KwaZulu-Natal, which works particularly well for a winter bush-and-beach honeymoon.
Fun fact:Amarula cream liqueur is made from the marula fruit, which elephants famously love. Locals joke it’s the only time elephants and honeymooners share the same taste in nightcaps.
Zanzibar is an obvious option. The Seychelles can also work well, although the south-east trade winds affect conditions on some beaches. Mauritius is in its cooler winter season – pleasant, but not as hot as its summer months.
Good choices for June–August: Botswana • Zambia • Zimbabwe • Tanzania • Kenya • Zanzibar • Greater Kruger • KwaZulu-Natal • Lake Malawi
Honeymoon Destinations in Africa – September & October
If you asked us to pick the easiest all-round period for an African safari honeymoon, September and early October would be strong contenders.
Much of Southern and East Africa is still in the dry season, game viewing is excellent and temperatures are beginning to rise even in the cooler areas such as the Cape. There’s also good weather on the Indian Ocean islands as well.
Excellent safari almost everywhere
Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Greater Kruger are all strong safari choices.
September can be particularly rewarding as water becomes scarce, and wildlife concentrates around rivers and waterholes.
By October some areas in Southern Africa become very hot, particularly in Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, so that is worth bearing in mind if you don’t enjoy heat.
This remains an excellent period for East African safari.
The Migration has crossed into Kenya’s Masai Mara through there is plenty of resident game remaining in Tanzania. however exact movements vary from year to year.
You can then add the Kenyan coast, Zanzibar or Seychelles.
South Africa starts changing gear
Spring is arriving in South Africa. The Cape becomes increasingly attractive,
Spring flowers in the Cederberg & West Coast from August onwards
Peak season for whale watching at Hermanus
Wine estates are alive with the fresh leaves of the vineyards
while safari conditions remain excellent further north.
This creates some superb honeymoon combinations: Cape Town,+ Winelands + safari,
Good choices for September–October: Botswana • Zambia • Zimbabwe • South Africa • Kenya • Tanzania • Mozambique • Seychelles • Zanzibar

Why South Africa is such a rewarding first safari destination
Where to Honeymoon in Africa in November & December
Now the seasons begin to turn again. For honeymooners, South Africa moves back towards centre stage.
Cape Town, Winelands & the Coast
Cape Town and the surrounding Cape move into summer, making this an excellent time to combine:
The Garden Route, Cederberg and other parts of the Cape also work beautifully for couples who want a more active or self-drive honeymoon.
If you’re travelling over Christmas and New Year, however, book early. This is one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Safari is still very worthwhile
Don’t assume that safari stops being good simply because the rains arrive. The bush turns green, migrant birds arrive and many antelope species give birth.
There are also often attractive green-season rates from November onwards.
Victoria Falls and Zambezi River
However October to December is a less ideal time to visit Victoria Falls as at the end of the dry season, their flow is at its lowest. The positive side – if you do want to visit – is that this is almost the only time that you can visit Livingstone Island on the upper edge of the Falls, and definitely the time to swim to Devils Pools (generally only possible from late September to the end of December).
The Safari camps of the Lower Zamnbezi or Mana Pools typically also start closing for the season from mid to end November.
East Africa
November usually brings the shorter rains to parts of East Africa, but these tend to be less disruptive than the long rains of April and May.
Kenya and Tanzania can still be very rewarding, and by December conditions are changing again as the Migration begins moving south through the Serengeti ecosystem, though it tends to be more dispersed and less dramatic in size.
Indian Ocean
This is where we’d look more carefully at your exact dates and priorities.
Zanzibar, Mauritius, Mozambique and Madagascar move into warmer and more humid summer conditions, with some chance of rain.
However the tropical storms only come later in the summer, so it is still a good time to visit Madagascar.
Good choices for November–December: South Africa • Green-season safari • Tanzania • Kenya • Zanzibar • Seychelles, depending on your priorities
What if your wedding month isn’t the “best” time for your dream destination?
“Africa is not a one-season wonder — it’s a twelve-month love affair. The trick is matching your romance to her rhythms.”
Don’t panic.
You don’t necessarily have to honeymoon immediately after the wedding.
Some couples have a short mini-moon straight afterwards and take the bigger African trip several months later.
But very often that isn’t necessary.
The first destination you’ve fallen in love with may not be ideal for your dates, but Africa usually gives us several excellent alternatives.
For example:
Botswana isn’t ideal for your budget or month? Look at South Africa, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
Zanzibar is in the long rains? Consider Mozambique, Mauritius or Seychelles depending on the month.
Cape Town is in the middle of winter? Combine your Kruger safari with KwaZulu-Natal or another warmer region instead.
You want safari in January? South Africa and Tanzania both give us good options, but for different reasons.
This is where choosing the destination around the dates, rather than forcing the dates around a predetermined destination, makes a big difference.
Safari & beach – don’t plan the two halves separately
When you’re choosing a safari-and-beach honeymoon, don’t simply find your favourite safari lodge and then your favourite beach hotel.
The two need to work together.
We look at:
The weather in both destinations
Flight connections
How much time you lose travelling
The balance between active safari days and downtime
The overall budget
Whether the two halves actually feel different enough from one another
Sometimes the “second-best” beach on your original wish-list makes for the much better honeymoon overall because it connects effortlessly with the safari.

Frequently Asked Questions about Africa Honeymoons
Can we combine safari and beach on one honeymoon?
Absolutely. Some of our favourite combinations include: Tanzania + Zanzibar Kenya + Kenyan Coast South Africa + Mozambique Zambia + Lake Malawi South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal safari + coast The trick is choosing combinations that work well for your particular month.
What if we want to see the Great Migration?
The Great Migration happens throughout the year – not just during the famous river-crossing season. The herds generally move through different parts of the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem as rainfall and grazing change. Tell us your travel dates and we’ll recommend the areas that usually make most sense at that time. But keep an open mind: wildlife doesn’t read calendars.
Which months offer better value for an African honeymoon?
Shoulder and green-season periods can offer very good value. But these differ by country. For example, safari rates in Botswana and some other destinations can be significantly lower outside peak dry season, while South Africa curiously offers slightly lower prices during its safari season if you are having a mixed honeymoon. Overall you get more ‘bang for your buck’ in South Africa and Namibia. We wouldn’t choose a poor month purely to save money, but there are often sweet spots where weather, wildlife and price overlap very nicely.
How far in advance should I book an African honeymoon?
For most honeymoons, 9 to 12 months ahead is comfortable. Book earlier if you are travelling during peak safari season, Christmas/New Year or want very small camps, or particular island resorts. But if your wedding is approaching alarmingly quickly, talk to us anyway. We can usually find good alternatives if you’re flexible. (But perhaps not at Christmas or peak migration season.)

Planning an African honeymoon?
You don’t need to work all of this out before speaking to us.
In fact, one of the most useful briefs we can receive is simply:
“We’re getting married in September, we have about two weeks, we’d like safari and some beach time, and this is roughly what we want to spend.”
From there, we can quickly narrow down which countries make sense – and which ones we’d rule out.
You may already have several lodges saved, an itinerary you’ve put together yourself or a route suggested by AI. Send that too. We’re very happy to start with the research you’ve already done rather than starting again from scratch.
We’ll look at the practical things that aren’t always obvious when you’re researching online: seasonality, flight connections, journey times, how many safari regions are sensible, where your budget is best spent and whether the beach you’ve chosen really works with the safari.
The aim is always the same: an African honeymoon which works as well in real life as it does on paper.

She also has some personal experience of the subject: Ginny and her husband were married under the African skies.
From remote safari camps to beautiful coastal lodges, she particularly enjoys matching the right places to the people travelling – rather than simply recommending whichever destinations happen to be fashionable.
