Overview

Greater Kruger * Drakensberg Mountains * Tuli Block, Botswana * Optional: Welgevonden Game Reserve

The Zeederberg Trail is less a fixed itinerary and more an inspiring framework for adventurous self-drive travellers, particularly those returning to South Africa for a second or third visit.

This safari journey takes you beyond South Africa’s better-known routes, combining the dramatic scenery of the northern highlands with rewarding safari experiences in both South Africa and over the border in the Tuli Block of Botswana. It works especially well as an extension to a stay at one of the private game lodges in the Greater Kruger region.

The suggested seven-night route reveals some of the most remote and characterful corners of northern South Africa. Along the way, you can enjoy sweeping mountain views, distinctive local landscapes, memorable food and varied wildlife encounters.

Key Highlights of the Zeederberg Trail

  • Scenic self-drive through northern South Africa
  • Panorama Route, Tzaneen and remote highlands
  • Wildlife and culture at Leshiba Wilderness
  • Rugged safari experiences in Botswana’s Tuli Block
  • Optional extension to Welgevonden Game Reserve
Safari Routing

After your Kruger safari (not included), travel through the scenic Blyde River Canyon and the Panorama Route before continuing towards the lush uplands around Tzaneen.

From here, you  lead north to Leshiba Wilderness, where the focus is on gentle wildlife viewing, walking, scenery and cultural heritage. You then continue towards the Tuli Block in southern Botswana, with the option to visit the mesmerising ruins of Mapungubwe en route.

Your safari culminates at Mashatu Game Reserve, known for its rugged terrain, dramatic wildlife viewing and adventurous safari activities. Here you leave your rental car and are transferred across the border (Limpopo River) and onto your safari lodge. Depending on the season, activities may include game drives, guided bush walks, photographic hides and even mountain biking safaris.

A longer nine-night version can also include two nights in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, offering a contrasting safari experience before returning to Johannesburg.

Tailor This Safari

We recommend combining the Zeederberg Trail with three to four nights in Cape Town and three nights at a private game lodge in the Greater Kruger region. This creates a varied safari of around 13 to 14 nights.

The route can also be shortened by removing one or two nights, depending on your available time and preferred pace.

For a longer safari, consider adding two nights in the Welgevonden Game Reserve. Elephant’s Crossing Lodge is one possible option, although there are several lodges to choose from, each offering a different style of safari.
