Adventure in Africa's Wild Places

cedarberg-mashatu-tented-camp-adventure-mashatu

This is always a tricky safari type to describe. For some travellers, adventure means tracking wildlife on foot with an expert guide. For others, it's paddling silently through the Okavango Delta in a mokoro, riding across open plains on horseback or sleeping under canvas in some of Africa's most remote wilderness areas. Canoe safaris are particularly famous along the Lower Zambezi and Mana Pools, where wildlife is often encountered at water level.

Adventure means different things to different people, which is why we've brought together a collection of safaris that go beyond the traditional game drive. These itineraries are designed for travellers who want to experience Africa more actively, more closely and often far from the usual tourist routes.

There's a wide range of adventure safaris! Some on foot, some by canoe or mokoro, some on horseback or even mountain bike. Exactly what’s on offer varies from camp to camp.

Different Styles of Adventure Safaris

Our adventure safaris offer the greatest opportunity to be out and about and be an active participant. But that’s where the similarity ends. Some are focused around staying active such as our South Africa and Victoria Falls Adventure. This is great for honeymoon couples, but open to anyone who likes to stay on the move. Others are adventurous simply because of the remote wilderness areas they visit. Yet others offer a more adventurous mode of travel and accommodation such as mobile camping safaris. Mobile camping safaris add another dimension, moving between carefully selected locations and allowing you to experience changing landscapes while staying close to nature.

Similarly, many walking safaris in Big Game country are adventurous safaris because of the very nature of the experience. We've covered these in more detail on our dedicated Walking Safaris page.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Adventure safaris range from gentle canoe trips and mokoro excursions to more physically demanding walking and cycling experiences. We’ll recommend options to suit your fitness and comfort levels.

Some of our favourites include Botswana for mokoro safaris, Zambia and Zimbabwe for canoeing and walking, South Africa for multi-activity adventures, and Madagascar for hiking and wildlife.

Many are, particularly canoeing, gentle walking and activity-based itineraries for older children. We’ll advise on the most suitable options based on your family’s ages and interests.
