Set between the towering dunes of the Namib Desert and the cool Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund is Namibia’s most characterful seaside town. It lies between Sossusvlei to the south and Damaraland to the north, making it a natural and welcome pause in any Namibia safari holiday.
Palm-lined streets, seaside promenades and well-preserved German colonial architecture lend Swakopmund a distinctly European feel. Which is deliciously incongruous given its desert setting!
After long drives through Namibia’s wide-open landscapes, this relaxed beach town offers a chance to slow down: stroll along the beach , indulge in some of the country’s best seafood, or check out some quirky museums.
We recommend two – and preferably three nights in Swakopmund, as then you can take a rest from driving, and also enjoy some of the many activities on offer.
Beyond the town, there’s an impressive range of excursions. Marine cruises from nearby Walvis Bay reveal dolphins and seals year-round, with whales appearing seasonally (July to October). Kayaking among the seals in the lagoon is both gentle and surprisingly immersive.
We strongly recommend either the Living Landscape tour into the dunes of the Namib to learn how life survives in one of the world’s oldest deserts. Or the adrenalin thrill and fascination of a 4x4 dune safari to Sandwich Lagoon. (3 nights would allow you to do both)
Inland, the landscapes quickly turn otherworldly. En route from Sossusvlei, you could detour to visit the eerie Moon Landscape, home to ancient welwitschia plants, or take a guided trip from Swakopmund.

How long should I stay in Swakopmund?
Most travellers spend two to three nights, which allows time to relax, enjoy the town and take part in one or two excursions without feeling rushed. We recommend three nights if possible.
Is Swakopmund suitable for families?
Yes. Many activities, including kayaking, dolphin cruises and dune excursions, work well for families, and the town itself is safe and easy to explore.
