Amboseli itself is a land of contrasts. Flat grasslands dotted with acacias and fever trees which stretch to the horizon, while at its heart lie lush marshes fed by underground channels from Kilimanjaroβs glaciers. These wetlands are the only permanent water source and sustain some 1,500 elephants and countless plains game including buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, giraffe, lion and cheetah.
Plus the smaller predators such as the ever-present black backed jackals, spotted hyena and bat eared foxes.
The local Maasai community shares the land around Amboseli, grazing cattle on its fringes β a striking reminder of how people and wildlife coexist.

Unusual Fact: Amboseliβs elephants are some of the most studied in Africa; the Amboseli Elephant Research Project has tracked families here for over 50 years.
Where to Stay
Amboseli is just a one-hour flight from Nairobi, yet it feels worlds away. Amboseli safari Lodges such as Tortilis CampΒ andΒ Amboseli Porini Camp combine luxury with authenticity, offering sweeping views of Kilimanjaro and front-row seats to Amboseliβs famous elephants.

To the east and south, the neighbouring parks of Tsavo and the Chyulu Hills bring a wilder, more secluded dimension to a southern Kenya safari.
Tsavo West and Tsavo East stretch over a vast wilderness, split by the old railway to Mombasa. Both are known for rugged, red-dust landscapes and elephant herds. Elephant herds are often tinged with red from the dust, while lion, cheetah, and buffalo roam the plains. Tsavo feels vast, untamed, and far less visited than the Mara or Amboseli β perfect for those who want space and solitude.
Nearby, the Chyulu Hills rise like a green oasis from the plains. Their rolling volcanic hills, lava tubes, and acacia forests create a unique habitat β and some of Kenyaβs most exclusive safari experiences. Here youβll fins some of the best safari experiences in Kenya,Β Ol Donyo Lodge, As well as the much-lovedΒ Camp Ya Kanzi. Activities go beyond game drives: horse riding, mountain biking, and guided walking safaris are all possible here, combining adventure with barefoot luxury.
All these reserves deliver fabulous views of Mount Kilimanjaro and have differing safari experiences. Together with Amboseli, Tsavo and the Chyulu Hills create a diverse southern Kenya safari β from iconic elephant herds to hidden volcanic hills and vast red-earth wilderness.

Game-viewing is good year-round, though the dry season (of June to October) offers the most concentrated elephant sightings at the marshes.
Is Amboseli worth visiting in addition to the Masai Mara?
Yes, the two parks feel very different: Amboseli offers Kilimanjaro views and huge elephant herds, complementing the Maraβs migration drama of wildebeest and zebras.
