The main drawcards are Belle Mare, with its seemingly endless sweep of sand, and Île aux Cerfs, lying just offshore near Le Touessrok. Together they define the east coast’s appeal: elegant beaches, calm lagoons threaded with deeper channels, so that the sparkling waters swirl from turquoise to deep green and luminous blue.
The lagoons here are generally shallow, creating ideal conditions for a wide range of water sports, and the east coast has become a hub for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with the trade winds being an advantage rather than a drawback.

For golfers, this is the most appealing coast in Mauritius. Belle Mare is home to two excellent courses, while the championship course on ÃŽle aux Cerfs offers a memorable round set against lagoons and ocean views: a genuine highlight for keen players.

Beyond the beaches, the east coast also rewards gentle exploration. The Grand River South East winds through lush countryside before plunging over a broad waterfall into a dramatic gorge. You can visit by boat and it’s easily combined with time on Île aux Cerfs.
Even further south, there are long stretches of lush indigenous vegetation in the south-east. You can visit the traditional town of Mahebourg, drive along past the Pointe du Diable, walk or hike, and perhaps visit the little islet of Ile aux Aigrettes.

It shines in summer when prevailing winds are a counterpoint to the hot sun. In winter, conditions can be windier, so many prefer to combine it with the west or north coast.
Is the East Coast suitable for non-golfers?
Absolutely. While golf is a highlight, the region also offers excellent beaches, water sports, spas and boat excursions.
Are the beaches good for swimming?
Yes. The lagoons are generally shallow and calm, though the breeze can affect conditions at certain times of year.
