Birkenhead House is perched high on the cliffs of Hermanus, overlooking the whale watchers' paradise of Walker Bay. This sophisticated boutique hotel is decorated to reflect the beauty of its coastal setting, and is adorned with rare maritime antiques and impressive contemporary art works. It is an unusual mix of beach house style and opulent furnishings. Indeed no expense has been spared in making Birkenhead House the ultimate coastal retreat.
Most of the eleven opulently appointed suites offer expansive vistas of Walker Bay. The choice of room types mainly reflects the views with some having expansive sea views and others views of the mountains. Each is individually decorated with underfloor heating and huge bathtubs.
From the comfort of your room or the hotel’s terrace, you can look forward to sighting the majestic Southern Right whales that enter the sheltered waters of Walker Bay every year to calve. Other attractions at Birkenhead House include a gym and treatment centre, and a dual-level swimming pool located in a sheltered courtyard. Not forgetting, of course, that the two best swimming beaches of Hermanus lie just below the hotel.
The cliff path of Hermanus, with its breathtaking views, runs just in front of Birkenhead House allowing you to enjoy whale-watching and the sea views at your leisure. Lavish meals and seafood delicacies are served in the glamorous dining area or on the terrace overlooking the ocean. Room service will be happy to oblige you with a sumptuous breakfast in bed.
Next door is Birkenhead Villa which has been decorated to the same luxurious standards with five suites luxuriously decorated in classic seaside white. As with Birkenhead House, there is a choice of room types reflecting both the views on offer and room size. Birkenhead Villa is set slightly further back which means that there are fewer sea views on offer. However in contrast to Birkenhead House, the Villa takes children and there is a two bedroom suite which is particularly suited to families.
Service at both Birkenhead House and the Birkenhead Villa is attentive and personalized with the atmosphere being homely, relaxed and fun.
