Discover the Okavango Delta in Botswana at its most intimate on this four-night walking safari in one of Africa’s great wilderness regions.
The delta is shaped by the remarkable meeting of the Okavango River and the sands of the Kalahari. The result is a rich mosaic of riverine forest, palm-fringed islands, permanent wetlands and dry sandveld, supporting an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
Your safari begins with a night at Shinde Camp, followed by three nights at Footsteps Camp. Here, the focus shifts from traditional game viewing to a slower and more immersive way of exploring the bush. Accompanied by your private experienced walking guide, you will learn to read tracks, notice smaller details and understand the rhythms of the landscape on foot.
Mokoro excursions may also form part of the experience, offering a peaceful perspective from the delta’s narrow waterways.
Footsteps reflects the spirit of the original under-canvas safari. The camp is simple, comfortable and deeply connected to its surroundings, with just three guest tents and meals prepared over the campfire.
Footsteps Across the Delta is a small, traditional bush camp in the Shinde Concession.
The camp has three insect-proof canvas tents with sewn-in floors and proper beds. Each tent has a private bucket shower and bush toilet. There is also a raised game-viewing platform and a simple bush kitchen, where meals are prepared over the campfire.
The experience is more rustic than a conventional safari lodge, but it remains comfortable, well hosted and wonderfully atmospheric.
We have included one night ay Shinde Camp, 3 nights at Footsteps and 2 full days with an experienced walking guide. However you can add a second night at Shinde Camp to include more time for game drives and water-based activities alongside the walking safari. See our 5-night price below.
Walking safaris can also be arranged from selected camps, including Shinde, Okuti and Kanana. This allows you to enjoy a more conventional lodge stay while still enjoying a full-on walking safari. Contact us for a tailor-made quote.
On arrival in Maun, you are met and transferred by light aircraft into the Okavango Delta to the Shinde private concession for an overnight stay at Shinde Camp.
5 night option: 2nd night at Shinde Camp
After a final morning game drive or activity, you are transferred via 4Γ4 vehicle to the camp for your three nights stay. Here you are joined by your private walking guide for the next 3 nights.
You stay at Footsteps Camp on the Shinde Concession of the Okavango Delta. This consists of three insect-proof dome tents, with sewn-in floors and proper beds, a private bucket shower and bush toilet for each tent, a game-viewing platform and a bush kitchen with meals cooked over the camp fire.
You return to camp for a piping hot bucket shower under the stars followed by a tasty dinner.
The day begins before sunrise with coffee around the fire, and a light breakfast before heading out to see what the bush has in store.
Walking in the Deltaβs wilderness is the highlight of a βtrue safariβ experience. No special training is required, as distances travelled are small β rather the focus is on exploration and discovery β each morning tracking fresh spoor to reveal the nightβs events.
Following another delicious lunch prepared on charcoal, you are left to a lazy afternoon relaxing in your tent or reading. In the afternoon you enjoy another game walk or other safari activities include game drives, mokoro trips or fishing, which vary throughout the year.
After a final early morning game walk or drive and brunch, you bid farewell to the camp staff and your guides and you are transferred by 4Γ4 vehicle back to Shinde airstrip where you fly back to Maun.
