CEDARBERG RATING

Top of Class

Overview

  • One of the grandest historic Cape Dutch houses in South Africa
  • Set on its own working wine estate in Stellenbosch
  • Oozing in romance and history for honeymoon couples and all romantics
  • Superb new state of the art Spa

Lanzerac Hotel & Spa is nestled in the foothills of the idyllic Jonkershoek Valley in the Winelands. It lies on a wine estate close to the historic university town of Stellenbosch (1.4km away, less than a mile). Few boutique hotels can enjoy a more spectacular location. Mountains, oak-lined avenues, lush vineyards all combine to provide the archetypal Cape wine farm setting of this beautiful hotel.

Settle yourself beneath the shade of an old oak with a glass of wine in hand and step back in time. Built in 1692, the Lanzerac is one of South Africa’s finest examples of Cape Dutch Architecture. However, after a fire, the Lanzerac Hotel has been recently refurbished to combine the best of old world tradition with new world expertise and efficiency. Today this five star hotel and estate is known for timeless luxury, service, fine wine and cuisine.

Accommodation

This gracious hotel's restaurant and lounge areas are in the 300-year-old Manor House. It lies within 10 hectares of award-winning landscaped gardens featuring numerous ancient oaks - some 160 years old. However the Lanzerac has managed to create welcoming interiors which blend both period grandeur and contemporary style. There are 53 individually furnished rooms and suites including the Royal Pool Suite with its own private plunge pool. All rooms have air-conditioning,  underfloor heating and private patios overlooking the vineyards, gardens and the Helderberg Mountains. Each room is individually desgned with great flare and an attractive mix of contemporary and antique furnishings.

Wine and dining

The French concept of terroir - the mysterious blend of climate, soil and setting that produces the unique taste of the wine - takes form here as the Lanzerac Hotel is also a working wine farm and cellar. You can enjoy a 'Wine Safari' which gives an in-depth view of the vineyards, grape cultivars, wine making and tasting. The Lanzerac's stunning range of wines are the perfect complement to meals at the Lanzerac. Complimentary wine-tasting and a cellar tour is included as well as spa access.

There is a choice of three restaurants: The Manor kitchen, the Deli restaurant and the Tapas bar and restaurant. There are plenty of quiet places to hang out from the the Craven bar and lounge to the Taphuis, a historic bar decorated with antique yellowwood furniture with a huge Cape Dutch kitchen fireplace as the centre-piece.

Other Facilities

The Lanzerac Hotel accepts children with interleading rooms available. There is plenty of space for children to play around and easy family walks to enjoy in the surrounding vineyards of the Lanzerac estate. The choice of restaurants also works well for families who can opt for more casual dining if they prefer.

Lanzerac Spa

You may also like to sample the Lanzerac Spa, a well-equipped Spa & Wellness Centre where six therapy rooms are complemented by saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzi and heated indoor pool. Given its surroundings, the Spa specializes in therapy from the winelands, using grapes as the base of all therapy oils. Note that the spa pool is only open to children once the Spa treatment rooms have closed eg from 5pm to 10pm

Lanzerac Hotel & Spa

"To end the day off, the spectacular Lanzerac Hotel & Spa offers a world-class experience and stay. Another historical location, this accommodation offers a variety of facilities, all providing top-notch luxury. Lanzerac offers 48 individually furnished rooms and suites, all with private patios overlooking the vineyards, gardens, and mountains. All the interiors share a hint of period grandeur with a modern twist. Three consecutive suites (Room 106 – 108) share a private pool, which is perfect for groups of three couples that wish to have a private space. Room 403 is particularly a great pick for honeymooners as it is very romantic and secluded from the rest of the hotel. All the rooms feature an included fully stocked mini-bar, which adds to the phenomenal service that Lanzerac offers. Enjoy the world-class cuisine and wines that Lanzerac has to offer. Wine tastings at Lanzerac are a memorable experience that includes fantastic service and excellent wines (I recommend sommelier Steve). You can also enjoy the hotel’s well-equipped Spa & Wellness Centre. Given its surroundings, the Spa specializes in therapy from the Winelands, using grapes as the base of all therapy oils. Six therapy rooms are complemented by saunas, steam rooms, fully-equipped gymnasiums, Jacuzzi, and a heated outdoor swimming pool. Guests can also visit the Lanzerac cellars and enjoy a glass of 2019 Merlot at the Viewpoints, surrounded by nature. On rainy days, guests can still enjoy this experience by being hosted indoors in the Premier Room. It is good to note that guests can request a private wine-tasting experience at the viewpoints, if they would prefer to do so. Lanzerac will also offer shuttles to guests into town and wherever they prefer. The rates of the shuttles will be calculated per kilometre, but they do offer three shuttles free per day that will run at certain times. "
