Shamwari was the original malaria-free game reserve in the Eastern Cape. And remains at the forefront of conservation in the area. One of Shamwari's strengths is that it lies at the convergence of five ecosystems. And this diversity supports the Big Five as well as varied antelope and a rich bird life. This beautiful 20,000ha malaria-free reserve is situated in the verdant bush along the Bushmans River. Luxury accommodation is offered at six lodges on the reserve, quite diverse in their appearance.

Shamwari Eagles Crag is an avant-garde masterpiece of thatch, stone and glass secretly hidden away in a secluded lush valley in the central part of Shamwari game reserve. This is a stunning gorge setting, surrounded by temperate forest vegetation & looking out onto imposing mountain cliffs & riverbed below. We think that Shamwari Eagles Crag offers the most luxurious accommodation at Shamwari.

Accommodation

Nine luxurious glass and thatch suites all have expansive views of the surrounding gorge. They have been designed so that your privacy is assured even whilst wall to wall glass doors on two sides allow you to open up the suite to the sights and sounds of the bush. Outside is your own private wooden deck. Complete with private plunge pool with views over the densely vegetated kloof where eagles soar.

Each suite has a light and airy feel with contemporary colours and light wood furniture. Facilities include air-conditioning, tea/coffee facilities, safe, telephone, minibar, ceiling fan, bird-spotting telescope and en suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers.

Facilities at Eagles Crag Lodge

The main lodge at Shamwari Eagles Crag is stylish and luxurious with plenty of quiet spots to relax. Enjoy a sumptuous meal in the dining room before retiring to the gracious lounge for a quiet drink and a chat with fellow guests. Outside there's a boma for alfresco dining under the stars around the fire. Other facilities include a library, cigar lounge with fireplace & big screen TV with glass fold-away walls opening out onto the deck.

As well as morning and afternoon game drives with experienced and well-trained rangers, you can relax at the Relaxation Retreat at Shamwari Eagles Crag. The Relaxation Retreat has a variety of personalised treatments on offer as well as a hydro bath, steam room and sauna.

Shamwari is at the forefront of sustainable eco-tourism. Conservation at Shamwari is about the development, management and rehabilitation of the Eastern Cape bushveld to create a sustainable eco-system through the ongoing implementation of conservation principals. Their wildlife department includes a breeding centre, an education centre and a team of ecologists, environmentalists and game-management experts. Over the years, Shamwari has won many awards including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve.
