Maxa is one of the newest and most exciting camps to arrive in Botswanaβs Okavango Delta. It sits tucked beneath a grove of ebony trees overlooking a permanent lagoon alive with hippos and birdlife. Its name comes from the local word for βto openβ β a fitting description for a place that invites curiosity, reflection, and connection with nature. This small, design-forward camp blends earthy craftsmanship with easy-going comfort, perfect for travellers seeking both creativity and calm in the Okavango Delta.
Maxa is an intimate camp with just 5 rooms, sleeping up to 12, offering a classic Okavango safari experience. Maxa will offer safari goers the chance to explore the Delta on game drives, walking safaris and seasonal mokoro rides.
The camp embodies a philosophy of learning and freedom, reflected in its unique design, featuring a freeform lounge and dining area under canvas roofs.Β At the heart of camp, clay-walled lounges flow into an airy dining area, library and sala β all styled with handmade furniture and creative lighting. Guests can relax in the hammock deck or watch the lagoonβs edge flicker with fireflies after dark.
Given its small size, it also lends itself to a multi-gen family taking over the whole camp. (Though the mimumum age is 6 years and older.)
Activities & Experiences
Days at Maxa unfold in the spirit of exploration. Glide silently through the reed beds on a mokoro, walk among ancient termite mounds on foot safaris, or head out in search of lion and lechwe on day and night drives. When water levels allow, fishing and gentle cultural exchanges with nearby communities deepen the experience. Evenings bring starlit dinners in the sandy courtyard and the scent of wood-fired bread wafting from the campβs oven.
Accommodation at Maxa
With just five tents, Maxa feels personal and private. Each canvas suite is raised on a deck with lagoon or forest views, an indoor shower and a delightful open-air bathroom. The family tent offers two bedrooms and shared facilities.
It has a strong sustainability footprint. It is EcoTourism-certified, 100% solar-powered, using local materials with a low-impact ethos.
