Overview

  • Stylish and luxurious tented camp
  • Large private reserve straddles delta and vast open plains
  • Excellent game viewing
  • Full range of activities on land and water
  • Clean lines with a modern touch

Vumbura Plains is a stylish camp in a private Okavango Delta concession (NG22) north of the Moremi, which it shares with its sister camp, Little Vumbura. It comprises two separate lodges each with seven enormous suites which are amongst the most luxurious in Botswana. Both North and South camps have their own spacious raised dining, lounge and bar areas beneath a canopy of indigenous trees with glorious vistas across the floodplains. The emphasis is on relaxation with decks on different levels and built-in sofas. Funky hanging pod chairs provide a retro 70's feel. There's a library with a selection of books, open-sided dining room and modern bar. A little away from the lodge is a built in seating area around a fire-pit, perfect for a day-time siesta or recounting the day's events around the fire in the evening.

Accommodation

The wood and canvas suites under thatch are on raised platforms beneath a dense canopy of indigenous trees. The décor of Vumbura Plains Camp is light and airy with a modern Scandinavian feel and use of wood. Each suite looks out over the watery plains and has a comfortable bedroom, sunken lounge, sumptuous bathroom with outdoor shower and a private deck with plunge pool and shaded sala. Two family suites are also on offer at Vumbura North with a private deck linking two separate rooms.

Wildlife in the concession is prolific and with a combination of riverine and savanna woodland habitats, the diversity is exceptional: red lechwe, waterbuck, kudu, wildebeest, tsessebe, hippos and crocodiles; the rare and noble sable is common here as are large herds of elephant and buffalo. The reserve is also home to lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah; and wild dog like the plentiful open plains. Bird watching combines the best of both worlds with the Okavango specials and acacia and dry woodland species.

Game activities at Vumbura Plains Camp

With permanent water nearby and a vast expanse of dry land, the lodge offers the full range of water and land-based activities for most of the year. Take to the water in the silence of a traditional mokoro or enjoy the faster delta boats for some spectacular scenery, bird watching and game viewing. On land your ranger will navigate the marshy floodplains in an open game-viewing vehicle. Walking safaris (on request) and bird watching provide a serene and intimate encounter with the fascinating African bush.
