Overview

  • Mashatu Lodge offers an excellent all-round safari experience
  • Choice of game drives, walking safaris, mountain biking & horse riding safaris
  • Supremely comfortable colonial-style bedrooms
  • Great safari ambience
  • Family friendly with very low risk of malaria

Mashatu Lodge lies in the Mashatu Game Reserve within the Tuli Block on the very southern border of Botswana, where three countries meet. Mashatu is the embodiment of Africa – with space so open and vast, an array of wildlife from the gigantic to the miniscule; majestic skies unfettered by smog, and unexpected adventure beyond the usual game drives with horse-back safaris, cycling safaris and walks in the wild all on offer. While it is in Botswana, it is most easily reached from the South African side of the border.

Mashatu offers an excellent all-round safari experience, an oasis among the undulating and seemingly endless plains of the wild. Mashatu Main camp is perfect for someone who needs a little bit of pampering on their safari, in contrast with the more rustic tented camp.  It offers 14 air-conditioned rooms and family suites designed for absolute privacy. Watch elephants splashing at the waterhole, listen to the lyrical melody of the woodlands kingfisher and smell the grassy scent of the bushveld and inhale air so pure its intoxicating.

Other facilities include a large swimming pool, interpretative centre which is fascinating for old and young alike, and a convivial bar and deck in a stunning setting overlooking the active waterhole. Dinners are either served in the dining room or more commonly in the lantern-lit boma. Mashatu Lodge is ideal for couples and families alike and especially good during high summer when the air-conditioning is very welcome.

Activities

Mashatu’s exciting landscape of outcrops and gigantic trees is unique in Botswana, with a high concentration of elephant as well as cheetah and leopard. 4x4 safari vehicles with experienced rangers and trackers bring you into close contact with an Africa that is largely known only in wildlife documentaries. Mashatu also offers a range of other activities. These include walking safaris, mountain bike safaris, horse-riding safaris, photographic hides as well as cultural excursions.

Family adventures

Main Lodge is also ideally suited to family safaris, especially if you have kids between 6 and 12 years old. Their programme is designed to entertain your kids whilst also teaching them about the bush and the wildlife. They have an expert children's co-ordinator who's had plenty of experience with creating children's programmes. Each child is given a Mashatu backpack with an animal checklist, bird colouring book, compass and pencils. Games and activities include Animal Trivia games, bush walks, "who am I" animal games, wildlife movies and crocodile feeding.
