The award-winning Lion Sands Ivory Lodge is a luxurious lodge, combining the best of African and European elegance. It lies on the banks of the Sabi River with magnificent views to the open sand banks of the Kruger National Park. The Lion Sands game reserve is situated in the southern part of the 65,000 ha Sabi Sand Game Reserve. In an area well known for its spectacular game viewing, being at the confluence of two major rivers. It has exclusive access to the Sabi river which runs through their private reserve attracting plenty of wildlife.

Accommodation

9 ultra-luxurious suites are huge (165 m² in size and positioned at least 20 meters apart). All have breathtaking views over the River, so that game viewing can be done from the luxury of your own private suite. The interiors have a contemporary, harmonious elegance, simple and uncluttered. Each has an en-suite bathroom, outdoor & inside shower, courtyard, lounge with fireplace, wooden viewing deck, patio and private plunge pool. The bedroom & bathroom areas are air-conditioned with overhead fans, and telephone and internet access are also provided. The palatial Fish Eagle suite is huge and can be connected (via a discrete raised walkway) to a second suite to create a two bedroom private villa if you so wish.

The public areas at the lodge comprise a library lounge, bar with fireplace, wooden viewing deck, well stocked wine cellar, Lalamuka health spa and gym, curio shop & both an indoor and open-air boma dining area. The entrance area is separate to ensure that arriving and departing guests don’t have any impact on other guests relaxing at the lodge.

The Lions Sands focuses on sensitivity to the environment and complete privacy for its guests. Their safari philosophy is to offer an informative and holistic safari experience. Ensuring that all spheres of the eco-system, from the smallest insects to the mighty African elephant are viewed as a whole. The Sabi Sand game reserve is renowned for its exceptional Big Five game viewing given its rich soils which produce excellent grazing and browsing habitats. This attracts the plains game which in turn entices the predators, most notably lion and leopard. Morning and afternoon game drives are on offer along with interpretative bush walks accompanied by experienced ranger and tracking teams.

Fish Eagle Villa (two bedrooms)

Two en-suite bedrooms can sleep four adults and another two children, each on an extra single bed in their parents' rooms. Lion Sands River Lodge review by Peter Bates

Lion Sands River Lodge is a really good family-friendly lodge (kids of 10 and over) with a great setting by the Sabie River. The traversing area seems to deliver really excellent game sightings, with leopard a regular highlight. The accommodation is nice and crisp, and includes some family units; the kitchen turns out excellent food with admirable efficiency; and the two swimming pools allow plenty of people to kick back in comfort.

  • The More (owners of Lion Sands) family are very keen on conservation – off-roading is only done for a known sighting (verified on foot by tracker most often) of key animals such as leopard & lion
  • Rooms seem excellent after the revamp, although they are quite close together
  • Food was excellent, and the service ultra efficient
