Mbali Mbali Katavi

CEDARBERG RATING

Overview

Mbali Mbali's very comfortable lodge is situated in the centre of Katavi, the third largest national park in Tanzania. It is a perfectly crafted lodge located to take advantage of the far reaching views over the plains of Katisunga. It is well placed to offer a terrific bush experience and for exploring the spectacular wildlife of this remote and wild Park.

The design of Mbali Mbali Katavi has been very carefully thought through so that it blends in with its surroundings. This leaves the beauty of Katavi unspoiled. The lodge was completely refurbished in 2011 but still retains an African simplicity. The brand new mess area consists of a comfortable guest lounge, a spacious dining area and a viewing and swimming pool deck. A central fireplace on the main deck creates a warm and inviting atmosphere allowing you to arrive as strangers but leave as friends.

Accommodation

The lodge consists of spacious and comfortably furnished safari tents on raised wooden platforms. Each tent has a writing desk, lamps, fine linen and en-suite facilities with step-in showers. They all have private balconies with excellent views over the plains.

Location and Activities

Katavi National Park has a dry period from June through to the end of October making this the best time to visit. As the Katuma river dries the animals concentrate into smaller and smaller areas, making for the spectacularly large herds including elephants and buffalo. Katavi has Tanzania’s densest populations of crocodile and hippo and they are quite impressive. From November to April the park turns green and lush with the coming of the rains, but still has excellent game viewing and better bird populations.

Game drives here are at dawn and in the late afternoon and centre on the woodland and seasonal lakes for the big cats. The camp also offers early morning game walks when the light is at its best.

On the last evening of your stay with the Mbali Mbali team, a barbecue is served under the shade of the tamarind trees. You can reflect on the experiences you’ve had at Katavi while watching the sun setting over the plains.

Note: This lodge used to be known as Katuma Bush Lodge
