Overview

Located on the edge of South Luangwa National Park, Flatdogs Camp offers affordable, sustainable, and authentic safari accommodation to suit different budgets and travel styles, including family-friendly Chalet Rooms, traditional Safari Tents, the open-air Jackalberry Treehouse, and the private Crocodile Nest villa. You can also enjoy a relaxed dining experience with no set meal times, choosing from the camp’s restaurant menu and dining under thatch, in the courtyard, or in the garden overlooking the river.

As the first Fair Trade Tourism certified camp or lodge in Zambia, Flatdogs is committed to protecting the surrounding wilderness and supporting the local community.  Its proximity to the village of Mfuwe allows guests to explore local conservation projects, schools and artisan workshops.

The camp provides year-round access to the park, with activities including game drives, walking safaris and night drives. The Luangwa Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants. Added to this, there’s an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip.

The lodge features four chalet buildings, each with two private guest rooms connected by a shared kitchenette, making them ideal for families. The ground-floor room is a double with an ensuite bathroom and private verandah, while the upstairs room can be configured as a king, twin or triple, with a private bathroom and verandah located downstairs. A larger family chalet, situated further from the main area, offers two ensuite ground-floor bedrooms connected by a kitchen. A spiral staircase leads to a loft room with two single beds and an upstairs viewing deck. The loft room does not have an ensuite bathroom, and guests use one of the bathrooms in the downstairs bedrooms.

The camp offers seven Luxury Ensuite Safari Tents, six of which are set along the banks of the Luangwa River with uninterrupted river views. Each tent features a thatched roof, ensuite bathroom with hot shower, flush toilet and basin, king or twin beds with mosquito nets, electric lighting, a fan, universal charging points, a room safe, and tea and coffee-making facilities. Tent 11, the Honeymoon Tent, enjoys a private setting overlooking a tranquil lagoon frequented by elephants, giraffe, bushbuck and abundant birdlife. The Family Tent offers a spacious layout with a king bed, two single beds and a shared ensuite bathroom, making it ideal for families while still enjoying beautiful river views.

The camp's three Classic Ensuite Safari Tents offer comfortable, affordable accommodation in traditional Meru-style tents. Each features an ensuite bathroom with a semi-open shower, toilet and basin, along with a king or twin beds, mosquito nets, universal charging points and standing fans. Two Classic Tents enjoy riverfront views, while the third overlooks the same peaceful lagoon as the Honeymoon Tent, offering added privacy. While smaller than the Luxury Tents, they provide excellent value for solo travellers and budget-conscious guests. Please note that the Classic Tents do not include tea and coffee-making facilities, room safes or the larger verandahs found in the Luxury Tents.

Jackalberry Treehouse

The Jackalberry Treehouse offers a unique safari experience, immersed in nature and with uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. Elevated above the ground and open at the front, this distinctive retreat allows guests to enjoy wildlife sightings from the comfort of the sitting area or while relaxing in one of its two en-suite bedrooms, each featuring an open bathroom with a shower and a view. The treehouse includes wifi, a bar fridge, complimentary tea and coffee facilities, a safe, mains electricity, and the option of private dining. For groups of four, a private safari vehicle and guide are included throughout the stay. Guests are provided with a hand-held radio for transfers to and from the main camp, reflecting the property's secluded location. Open to guests aged 6 years and above, the Jackalberry Treehouse is available only during the dry season, from 15 April to 15 November.

The Crocodile Nest offers an exclusive safari retreat overlooking the magnificent Luangwa River. Designed as a spacious tented house, it combines privacy, comfort, and adventure, featuring 3 en-suite bedrooms with semi-open bathrooms, a sitting room, a private dining area, and a private swimming pool. Guests can unwind in complete seclusion before embarking on unforgettable wildlife experiences with their own private guide and safari vehicle. The residence also includes wifi, a bar fridge, complimentary tea and coffee facilities, a safe, and mains electricity, creating a luxurious home-away-from-home in the heart of the African wilderness. Guests can enjoy the added convenience of ordering meals from the lodge’s à la carte restaurant by radio, with freshly prepared dishes delivered directly to the house using the finest local ingredients. The Crocodile Nest welcomes families with children aged six years and above.
