This romantic holiday or honeymoon in South Africa offers some of the most exclusive and indulgent boutique lodges and hotels in South Africa.

It combines road transfers into your exclusive safari lodge in a Kruger Private Game Reserve, with an easy self-drive in the Cape. So it gives you the best of both worlds. The complete independence and flexibility of a self-drive, so that you are free to do as much or as little sight-seeing and exploring as you feel like. But starting the holiday with the security of being in capable hands on safari.

Romantic South Africa begins with some relaxation and rejuvenation time in the beautiful Drakensberg Escarpment area for a couple of nights. This is especially nice if you are coming straight from your wedding. Once you are ready to face the early morning game drives, you head off to one of South Africa’s prime private game reserves. Next it’s a flight down to the Cape for a varied experience including the Cape Winelands, two nights on the beach on the Whale Coast and ending with the highlight of Cape Town.

Upmarket itinerary (base price) – this is at a 5 star standard, but we can add more bells and whistles if you wish with upgraded rooms and lodges. Contact us! The more modest option is still at a 4+ star standard, as befits a honeymoon or big anniversary. Plus it takes a slightly different routing, including the Garden Route rather than Hermanus.

You begin your holiday with some relaxation and rejuvenation time in the beautiful Drakensberg Escarpment area for a couple of nights. On arrival at Kruger International Airport, you collect your Group H rental car (Audi A4 or similar) and head to Summerfields Rose Retreat in the Drakensberg escarpment area. The Drakensberg escarpment provides welcome relaxation after the excitement of a wedding. This area of tumbling streams and waterfalls amongst indigenous woodland and forest plantations provides scenic drives, relaxing walks, horse riding and soft adventure activities…

Summerfields Rose Retreat is nestled on 100ha in a secluded valley near Hazyview. It is set on Summerfields Rose Farm, famous for its export quality hybrid tea roses and macadamia nuts (which are also available for sale at the farm). Summerfields Rose Retreat has 12 exclusive tented suites under a canopy of Jackalberry trees, surrounded by nature with the sounds of cascading water amplified by a choir of bird calls and the occasional snort of a hippo. Each luxurious suite ensures total privacy.

Pared Back Option: Tanamera Lodge or Highgrove House

Once you are ready to face the early morning game drives, you are transferred by road to one of South Africa’s prime private game reserves which shares open borders with the Kruger National Park.

The Timbavati and Sabi Sands Game Reserves in South Africa offer some of the finest Big Five game-viewing in South Africa. Enjoy game drives in the early morning and evening to enjoy game viewing when the animals are most active. Game drives are conducted by experienced rangers and Shangaan trackers in open 4×4 vehicles, with excellent photographic opportunities. You traverse over 18,000 hectares of the finest big game country, with lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo thriving alongside giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope. Nocturnal animals, including the big cats, are regularly sighted on night drives. Bird watching is wonderful, with various eagles, owls, francolins, kingfishers, rollers and weavers among the over 300 recorded species.

Savanna Private Game Reserve is an intimate luxury safari lodge in the Sabi Sands. The lodge has just nine suites, each designed to have plenty of privacy. All suites feature private decks, heated plunge pools and outdoor showers. Savanna is particularly known for its excellent Big Five game viewing led by experienced guides and trackers.

Pared Back Option: Simbavati Hilltop Lodge, Timabavati Private Reserve

Today after a final early morning game drive, you are transferred to the Airport for your flight to Cape Town (flight not included in the tour price).

On arrival at Cape Town, you collect your rental car (Group H) and drive to Hermanus where you spend 2 nights.

The cosmopolitan fishing village and resort of Hermanus offers all year round charm with stunning sandy beaches, coastal walking trails, some of the finest wine estates in South Africa, beautiful fynbos vegetation and spring flowers. The more adventurous can even experience shark cage diving amongst the sharks at nearby Gansbaai.

The southern coast boasts some of the finest land-based whale-watching in the world between July and early December, when the Southern Right Whales come right into the bays to give birth. Enthralling sightings are a daily occurrence with spectacular breaches and whale song.

The Thatch House Boutique Hotel is an intimate country retreat set on the banks of the Klein River Lagoon just outside of Hermanus. Its spacious suites overlook either the gardens or lagoon, while the peaceful setting gives it a distinctly private feel despite being within easy reach of Hermanus and Stanford. Guests can relax by the swimming pool, make use of the tennis court or head out onto the lagoon for canoeing and other water-based activities.

Pared Back Option: Abalone Guest Lodge

The Cape Winelands is an exquisite area of rocky mountains overlooking green vineyards. Oak avenues lead to elegant Cape Dutch wine estates and some of the most charming towns and villages in South Africa. The pleasure of this region is the enjoyment of the good life: appreciating the wine and the unique Cape architecture; savouring long, lazy meals at one of the many excellent restaurants; or browsing in the craft studios and art galleries.

La Cotte Farm is a historic Cape Dutch Farm set on the edge of Franschhoek town, surrounded by landscaped gardens, vineyards and exquisite mountain views. It is within walking distance of the village, making it an appealing base for exploring Franschhoeks’s restaurants, galleries and shops.

Cape Town is one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world. Cradled by Table Mountain, it has immense charm and historical interest whilst its unique cultural blend; part African, part European and part Asian, makes for a cosmopolitan dining experience. Take the cable car or walk up Table Mountain, visit the colourful Malay quarter or meander through the wonderful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Browse through the vibrant Greenmarket Square, head out to Robben Island by boat or simply relax on the beach. When you want to range further, the Cape Peninsula offers one of the finest coastal drives in Africa to the Cape of Good Hope. Here you might see whales breeching just off the bay or quirky penguins on Boulder’s beach.

Sea Five Boutique Hotel is a small, stylish boutique hotel tucked away in Camps Bay. It definitely feels more like a sophisticated beach house rather than a conventional hotel, perfect for the couples looking for a relaxed atmosphere. Rooms have their own terraces and many enjoy epic views toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Pared Back Option: The Vineyard Hotel (Mountain facing room)

Today you return your rental car to Cape Town Airport in time for your onward flight.
