This three-night Sun City Golf escape is a superb standalone break or an effortless add-on to one of our longer golf trips or touring itineraries. Sun City is home to two of South Africa’s most iconic championship courses – the Gary Player Country Club, consistently ranked among the country’s top ten, and the dramatic Lost City course with its striking desert-inspired design. Your stay includes three rounds of golf across these celebrated layouts.

You can choose between two excellent hotels: Palace at the Lost City, a glamorous five-star retreat nestled beside lush botanical gardens, or the elegant Cascades hotel, a refined alternative with tranquil surroundings. Both offer easy access to the courses and a wealth of activities for golfers and non-golfers alike.

Families – love Sun City for its water park, lake activities and variety of dining options.

For those with a little more time, Sun City pairs beautifully with a safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, just 2½ hours’ drive away. It’s an ideal way to combine championship golf with a Big Five experience.

Day to Day Itinerary

On arrival in Johannesburg, you are met by our representative and transferred to the Sun City Resort, set in an ancient volcanic crater only two hours from Johannesburg. You stay at either the Palace at the Lost City or the Cascades Hotel

Luxury Option

The opulent Palace Hotel is considered one of the finest hotels in Africa. The sheer scale of the hotel is complemented by the extraordinary craftsmanship seen in this exquisitely decorated ‘palace’, with its handcrafted mosaics, frescoes, ornate ceilings and elegant bronze and stone sculptures. The 338 air-conditioned rooms have a contemporary African-Eastern style with hand-carved furnishings, luxurious bathroom, TV, telephone and minibar. The gardens are lush with rain forests, waterfalls and pools.

Pared Back Option

The Cascades Hotel is a sophisticated and elegant hotel set within lush gardens filled with tropical birds and water features. The Cascades is the grand old lady of Sun City, and still retains a timeless elegance. Understandably it’s often the favourite hotel amongst visitors who know Sun City well. All the rooms at The Cascades face the gardens which include 12 man-made waterfalls and cataracts. These beautiful gardens at the Cascades Hotel offer seclusion and escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Sun City. The 243 rooms have en suite bathrooms, TV, radio, air-conditioning, telephone and minibar. Luxury rooms and suites have spa baths.

This morning you enjoy a round of golf on the Lost City course.

The Lost City Country Club lies adjacent to the Palace of the Lost City. Like an oasis in the arid bushveld, the course , designed by South Africa’s grand master of golf, Gary Player offers many surprises.

The short but hazardous 13th is played over a crocodile-infested waterhole in the shape of the continent of Africa. Inhabiting the water hazard are 38 crocodiles, some of them nearly two metres long so it’s best to leave your ball if you hit a wayward shot into the water.

The rich green fairways of the course offer a dramatic contrast to the arid bushveld backdrop and the barren waste bunkers – a special feature of this intriguing course. The desert style design of the golf course is quite unique amongst South Africa’s green parkland and links courses.

Baobab trees and cacti are among the aesthetic attractions, and baboons are often seen on the course. No effort was spared to make this course a masterpiece. The views of the surrounding countryside and the Palace are breathtaking.

The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the resort or perhaps take a game drive in the Pilanesburg Game Reserve. The resort offers numerous attractions – how about taking a dip at the inland beach or braving the ‘Temple of Courage’ water rides? Health spas, tennis, squash, horse riding, all kinds of water sports are all available. The natural bushveld of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve surrounding Sun City offers malaria-free game viewing in open-top 4×4 vehicles.

This morning you enjoy a second round of golf on the superb Gary Player Country Club.

The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the various other facilities at Sun City or perhaps to enjoy an afternoon game drive into the nearby Pilanesberg National Park.

The Gary Player Country Club at Sun City is probably South Africa’s most famous golf course and with good reason. The course plays host to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge. Past winners include Ray Floyd, Steve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Ernie Els and Nick Price.

This course is one of the longest in South Africa at over 7000m and certainly one of the toughest, with the roughs being especially punishing. It places a premium on accurate approaches, with plenty of bunkers and water hazards to test even the best. Stray shots are likely to end up in the bushveld of the Pilanesberg – not an easy place from which to play a recovery shot.

Although this tree-lined parkland course is fairly flat, the many water hazards, cunning sited bunkers and hidden pin placement make up for the lack of gradient. However it can be enjoyed by both social golfers and professionals alike. The Gary Player golf course is the more difficult of the two courses at Sun City, the other being the Lost City course.

Please note that you can also opt to combine Sun City with a safari in Madikwe Game Reserve which is only 2½ hours drive north of Sun City.
