 African Heritage Township Tour

African Heritage Township Tour

This thought-provoking half day township tour starts in the Bo-Kaap, (Cape Malay Quarter). And continues to the historic District Six Museum. After this you head to Langa, the oldest “township” in Cape Town and Guguletu. Here you visit a traditional Healer, a Xhosa community centre and a small township shop before returning to the city centre.

You start the African Heritage Township tour with a brief orientation and then you proceed to the Bo-Kaap (Cape Malay Quarter). A look at the picturesque “Malay Quarter”, its dynamic museum and the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. You discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development.

Then you visit District Six. As a result of the Group Areas Act, 60 000 Capetonian families were forcibly removed from this once vibrant area. You visit the poignant District Six Museum. After this you proceed to the ‘townships’, also known as informal settlements, on the Cape Flats. As hosts of local community workers, we take a walk through a vibrant black community with all its different social strata. Langa is Cape Town’s oldest formal black township and you also visit the newer Guguletu community. You have the opportunity to talk to the local people and try the traditional African sorghum beer and ginger beer at a small township shop, as well as a visit to a traditional Healer.

The price above is for a private morning or afternoon half day township tour per person. We can also arrange for you to enjoy a similar tour to the townships by bicycle if you want to be more active and more in touch with your surroundings.
