Walk to Freedom Township Tour

This thought-provoking half day township tour starts in the Bo-Kaap, (Cape Malay Quarter). And continues to the historic District Six Museum. After this you head to Langa, the oldest “township” in Cape Town and Guguletu. Here you visit a traditional Healer, a Xhosa community centre and a small township shop before returning to the city centre.

The day commences with a visit to the picturesque “Bo-Kaap”, a historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery. Discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development. Continue to Zonnebloem, originally District Six, and visit the living museum. Established in 1994, it incorporates memories of District Six and the forced removals. With the struggle for the land now taking a different form, the museum supports the process of ‘reinventing’ District Six for the present.

Next head to the Cape Flats, where a stop will be made at Langa Township’s Gugu S’Thebe Arts & Cultural Centre. The centre is dedicated to the empowerment of the people of Langa and improving their socio-economic situation. Their focus is on alleviating unemployment by providing support services to entrepreneurs as well as the improvement of life in the township through Arts & Culture. Explore the local arts and crafts in the various studios, metal and pottery workshops, as well as the retail facility. Embark on a walking tour with a local guide providing the opportunity to be exposed to the Langa lifestyle.
