East African countries Kenya and Tanzania, explode with life during the Great Migration. This natural phenomenon has captivated explorers and wildlife lovers for centuries. Witnessing millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle thunder across the savannas is a bucket-list experience. Choosing the perfect camp from which to witness and enjoy this spectacle can be tough with so many incredible options on offer.
But before we dive in, what exactly is a migration camp? Essentially, it’s a luxurious mobile camp that moves with the migration. Nature has its own rhythm, and these camps follow that. Typically the camp is in the southern Serengeti from November to March. This is the calving season after the short rains when the southern plains are alive with new births. This naturally attracts the predators hoping for an easy meal.
Then the camp is packed up and moves north, usually during the quiet rainy months of April and May. It reopens again in June in the northern Serengeti where the wildebeest migration gathers at that time.
But just because they are mobile does not mean they skimp on luxury.
Alongside “migration camps,” we’ve also included some of our favourite permanent camps with enviable positions right on the doorstep of the migration action at its peak in northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara.
1. Sayari Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania:
Nestled in the northern Serengeti, Sayari Camp boasts luxurious suites and front-row seats to the dramatic Mara River crossings. Witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of the seasonal migration at the river’s edge. Spend the day watching the thundering hooves and sweeping landscapes before retreating to the cool embrace of the rock pool for a relaxing evening. Another key offering to enjoy is their bush picnic option. (Bonus: Eco-conscious travellers will appreciate their impressive sustainability efforts.)

2. Olakira Migration Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania
Moves with the seasons
Embrace the nomadic spirit of the Great Migration at Olakira Migration Camp. This unique camp boasts nine luxurious en-suite tents that blend seamlessly into the wilderness as a temporary haven. These tents offer an intimate connection with the surrounding wildlife. Committed to sustainable practices, Olakira leaves no trace behind as it follows the herds, ensuring minimal impact on this pristine environment.
This is one of the Migration camps which moves with the seasons. It spends half of the season in the north for the migration river crossing (June to mid-October) and then the other half (mid- November to March) in the Ndutu plains of Southern Serengeti for the calving season.
