Big Cave Camp, nestled within Zimbabwe's Matobo Hills National Park, is a unique and tranquil retreat. Set on top of a huge granite ridge and accessible only by 4x4, the lodge is the ideal getaway for those seeking natural beauty, cultural exploration, and warm hospitality. It lies atop an enormous granite whaleback, commanding inspirational views across the famous Matobo National Park. Sophisticated African architecture incorporates colossal boulders into a luxuriously appointed thatched lodge positioned amidst ancient Khoisan rock art.
The camp's central living areas are set against dramatic boulders, blending into the structureβs design. Retire at a day's end to the natural rock-pool and sundeck, the Leopard's Lair lounge and bar for pre-dinner drinks or the popular lodge library. Dining is a relaxed affair, with guests and managers sharing a table. Outside, the rock pool and sundeck provide a cool contrast to the surrounding granite. The nearby pool boma offers a refreshing escape, while the cave-style boma, lit by lanterns at sundown, invites guests to gather around the fire and share stories.
The design of the lodges is A-frame granite under thatch, which ensures they are cool in summer and warm in winter. The eight lodges, each with en-suite bathroom and private balcony, resonate African creative flair. Included is a honeymoon suite, as well as family rooms for those with small children.
From history, culture, flora, and fauna in the Matobo Hills, guests have a wide variety of activities to choose from, all accompanied by a qualified guide. These include game viewing and rhino tracking, visiting Rhodes Grave and World's View, mountain biking and adventure races, cultural activities, viewing ancient Khoisan rock art, and bird watching.
