Horizon Horseback Safari Lodge

CEDARBERG RATING

Premier

Overview

Horizon Horseback South Africa is situated 3 hours north of Johannesburg, in the Waterberg. The lodge is situated on a privately owned game reserve in the bushveld.

This is the perfect holiday for those riders wishing to experience the pleasure of riding with African wildlife in the absence of dangerous game. Wildlife to be seen on the reserve include hippo, giraffe, zebra, antelope, leopard, caracal, brown hyena, jackal, crocodile and aardvark. There are also over 300 bird species on the reserve.

The Lodge

The lodge is beautifully set alongside a large lake within the estate’s dedicated game reserve. The Lodge has 7 rooms. All rooms are en suite with either shower or bath or both facilities. The 7 double rooms are separate from the main lodge. Three suites overlook the lake and have a small veranda area. The rondavels are a traditional African dwelling adjacent to the lodge with its own charm.

There is a large living area, dining room and large stoep (or verandah) for guests to enjoy. Three delicious meals are served a day with afternoon tea before an afternoon ride. All drinks are complimentary.

Camp Davidson

Horizon Horseback can offer guests a day or few at the luxury camp in the bush – Camp Davidson. Camp Davidson is set in a private game reserve which forms part of this historic family estate.

Large canvas tents on decks are nestled amongst the trees and rock formations in the bush. The camp is named after Ted Davidson, Rupert Baber's (Horizon Horseback partner) great grandfather. At the turn of the 19 century he toured the Waterberg on his horse with his ox-wagon selling wares to the local farmers. Camp Davidson recreates some of the authenticity of those days, except with a little bit luxury added.

There are 4 canvas tents in Camp Davidson. The camp has a wonderful panoramic view of the central highlands of the Waterberg, while overlooking the Sunset Lake at the eastern boundary of the Ranch. Each tent is appointed as it would have been in Ted’s day with classic items that would have been essential to the traveller accustomed to regular nights in the bush

From the camp, you will ride out across the reserve and be able to enjoy being in close proximity to the African bush.

Activities

This riding holiday is fully flexible and offers the opportunity for many other activities in addition to game viewing, in particular great out-rides over excellent riding country and also polo-crosse, jumping, western games and swimming with your horse.

During your stay, there are a number of non-riding activities on offer; sundowners, bush walks, game drive, elephant backed riding, fishing, cultural, historical and environmental aspects of the Waterberg can be explored. You can visit the Endangered Wildlife Trust upon arrangement. Otherwise, just relax with a massage with or enjoy the African bush.
