Butiama Beach Lodge

CEDARBERG RATING

Premier

Overview

Butiama Beach is an owner-run boutique lodge on the west of Mafia Island, perfect for watching the sun set. It is the ideal place to relax and unwind after a thrilling safari. The lodge suits those wanting peace and tranquillity as well as keen snorkellers and divers. Though it is the opposite side of the island from the marine reserve, it is easy to arrange excursions with the owner (who also has a Dive School), and the distance is only 30 minutes or so.

Accommodation

Individually furnished bungalow rooms face the ocean with their own outside seating area with veranda furnishings. They are in two rows, offset, so all have a view and are equipped with yacht fans and mosquito nets. Lie back and relax in your hammock, taking in the refreshing sea breeze and watch the sun gently set.

Meals are table d’hote with lots of Mediterranean influence, thanks to Italian owner, Maura.

Activities at Butiama Beach

As well as swimming with whale sharks - the world's largest fish, diving and other watery activities, guests can take a trip to Chole Island or take a guided walking tour of Kilindoni, the nearby town, for a taste of the laid back island life of the local community. You may also like to go sailing in a traditional dhow to the nearby islands and explore other beaches on Mafia Island.
