South Africa Safaris

Diverse game reserves from Kruger to the Kgalagadi offer huge concentrations of game with close encounters with large predators often on offer.

Overview

A safari in South Africa offers some of Africa’s most successful and best loved game reserves and lodges. Few people consider that they are ‘going on safari’ in South Africa to the exclusion of all else. The more typical pattern is to incorporate a South Africa safari into a varied trip, combining a few days in the bush with time in a city, on the beach and enjoying the stunning scenery.

South Africa Safaris - The Kruger

The primary game reserve is the Kruger National Park . We usually suggets lodges in its adjacent private game reserves such as the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve and Timbavati Wildlife Reserve, and Thornybush. These private game reserves have open borders with the Kruger. But you have more flexibility with night drives, off-road sightings and bush walks.

Alternatively you can stay at one of the private concession camps within the Kruger National Park itself. This greater Kruger park gives you the best all-round safari in South Africa in our opinion.

See our blog on comparing two game experiences: Private Game Reserves or Private concessions for your Kruger safari

South Africa Safaris - Malaria-Free

Alternatively you could opt for one of the Malaria-free destinations such as Madikwe, the Eastern Cape and the Waterberg – see our page below on Malaria-free safari areas…

These are not the only non-malaria areas. Some of the more off the beaten track South Africa safaris are also malaria-free. Think Tswalu Game Reserve and the Trans Kalagadi National Park in the Kalahari, or the Great Karoo area of the Eastern Cape.

South Africa Safaris - Bush & Beach in Kwa Zulu Natal

Finally don't forget the Northern KwaZulu Natal reserves such as Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Phinda, Thanda and Zululand Rhino Reserve. These also offer excellent Big Five game-viewing.

Plus this is a good area to see cheetah, and of course white rhino. They have the added attraction of being close to some stunning Indian Ocean beaches so that you can combine 'bush and beach' with only a short road transfer in between. Well worth considering especially in our winter months when other parts of South Africa can be cool.

Highlights

  • Some of Africa’s most successful game reserves and best lodges are in South Africa.
  • Easy Bush & Beach combinations in KwaZulu Natal
  • Good opportunities to see some of the rarer apex predators such as cheetah and leopard
  • Still good concentrations of white and black rhino
  • Option of malaria-free game reserves

Very pleased with service

"Very pleased with service received from Cedarberg – queries adequately answered, friendly + helpful staff (it helped me that there was a UK tel number to call), documents sent were clear and comprehensive." Mrs Johnn, USA

The whole travel experience was excellent!

"We were very happy with the kind and professional way our travel request was dealt with. We received an outlined itinerary swiftly with an elaborate description that sounded very attractive. A couple of changes were made to adapt it somehow a little more to our wishes. The whole procedure was easy going and agreeable. A last minute change concerning our rental car was dealt with swiftly and smoothly. The whole travel experience was excellent! We all enjoyed our holiday very much. We would highly recommend booking with Cedarberg any time to family and friends and we hope to be able to book with them again in the future." Mrs Fenagun, UK

Cedarberg was very thorough

"Cedarberg was very thorough , helpful and easy to deal with. Very comprehensive information pack." Mrs Pamela Bailey

The trip was a great success, Thanks Cedarberg

"Thanks again to Cedarberg Africa and you Tash for arranging the bookings and being able to respond when delays in transportation became apparent. Again I have appreciated the significant effort that Cederberg Travel has put into your web information and the extra material on attractions provided with the itinerary." Mr R Brandon, USA

Rwanda was inspiring

"My wife and I approached Cederberg requesting a draft itinerary and recommendations for a visit to Rwanda. We received prompt, well-informed assistance, and a final itinerary which was absolutely perfect. Our tour of the country was well-structured in terms of acclimatisation, pace and variety. On the second last day of our visit, we met up with another group who had opted for a different tour agency, and were exhausted by the disproportionate amount of time spent on the road rather than enjoying the delights of their respective destinations." Mr David, USA
