South Africa Safaris

Diverse game reserves from Kruger to the Kgalagadi offer huge concentrations of game with close encounters with large predators often on offer.

Overview

A safari in South Africa offers some of Africa’s most successful and best loved game reserves and lodges. Few people consider that they are ‘going on safari’ in South Africa to the exclusion of all else. The more typical pattern is to incorporate a South Africa safari into a varied trip, combining a few days in the bush with time in a city, on the beach and enjoying the stunning scenery.

South Africa Safaris - The Kruger

The primary game reserve is the Kruger National Park . We usually suggets lodges in its adjacent private game reserves such as the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve and Timbavati Wildlife Reserve, and Thornybush. These private game reserves have open borders with the Kruger. But you have more flexibility with night drives, off-road sightings and bush walks.

Alternatively you can stay at one of the private concession camps within the Kruger National Park itself. This greater Kruger park gives you the best all-round safari in South Africa in our opinion.

See our blog on comparing two game experiences: Private Game Reserves or Private concessions for your Kruger safari

South Africa Safaris - Malaria-Free

Alternatively you could opt for one of the Malaria-free destinations such as Madikwe, the Eastern Cape and the Waterberg – see our page below on Malaria-free safari areas…

These are not the only non-malaria areas. Some of the more off the beaten track South Africa safaris are also malaria-free. Think Tswalu Game Reserve and the Trans Kalagadi National Park in the Kalahari, or the Great Karoo area of the Eastern Cape.

South Africa Safaris - Bush & Beach in Kwa Zulu Natal

Finally don't forget the Northern KwaZulu Natal reserves such as Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Phinda, Thanda and Zululand Rhino Reserve. These also offer excellent Big Five game-viewing.

Plus this is a good area to see cheetah, and of course white rhino. They have the added attraction of being close to some stunning Indian Ocean beaches so that you can combine 'bush and beach' with only a short road transfer in between. Well worth considering especially in our winter months when other parts of South Africa can be cool.

Highlights

  • Some of Africa’s most successful game reserves and best lodges are in South Africa.
  • Easy Bush & Beach combinations in KwaZulu Natal
  • Good opportunities to see some of the rarer apex predators such as cheetah and leopard
  • Still good concentrations of white and black rhino
  • Option of malaria-free game reserves

1st class

"We have had Sonja with Cedarberg plan our trips for years and they have all been excellent. The properties she has chosen for us have all been 1st class and exactly what we wanted. Many were a giant puzzle of flights, drivers and lodging reservations and they all fit together perfectly. " Mrs Marianna Willis

Special memories

"I would like to thank you for the very full and comprehensive travel documents you put together for us – it made our trip so easy! The organisation was perfect and it was so helpful to have contact names for our hosts along the way! Our trip has certainly wetted our appetite for more holidays farther from home and other parts is SA. I have no doubt we’ll be returning one day! My overriding memory though is of the friendly people !” " Mr Mo Hemsley, UK

Very good value

"Peter was very helpful and clearly paid attention to our thoughts and ideas – we really valued his recommendations " Ms Winter, UK

The trip was amazing

"I will write in detail about all the places. In the meantime, I just wanted to write you a quick note to say THANK YOU so much for putting a wonderful trip together for our family. From the beginning to the end the trip was amazing. I will highly recommend you to anyone in the future for South Africa. " Mr Gord Dubey, USA

Great Recommendations

"I am into the details and ask lots of questions and I got all the info that I needed (and more) very quickly, which enabled my review all of Cedarberg’s recommendations and check for alternatives. I am very pleased to say that I changed none and all of the recommendations were 1st class. " Mr Ian Crispin, UK

All your arrangements/transfers worked like clockwork

"We have had the most fantastic holiday and that all your arrangements / transfers etc worked like clockwork. The accommodation and food was excellent everywhere we stayed. It has left us hungry for more (especially Victoria Falls) so we had better get saving for a return trip! This was our first trip to South Africa and we had no idea how stunningly beautiful your country is. " Laughton Family, UK
