Overview

The Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in South Africa is regarded as one of the most luxurious safari destinations, and with good reason. Covering approximately 65,000 hectares along Kruger National Park’s western boundary, it consistently delivers some of the finest Big Five game viewing on the continent, with a particular reputation for extraordinary leopard sightings.

Affectionately known as “the Sabi Sands”, this private reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, sharing an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park. The reserve is also home to a collection of exceptional safari lodges, ranging from world-renowned flagships to more understated, excellent-value options. We have personally visited virtually every lodge in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, enabling us to offer candid, experience-based advice rather than generic recommendations.

Leopard on a Sabi Sands safariWhy is the game-viewing so good on a Sabi Sands safari?

Permanent water sources
Firstly, it has two good rivers, the Sand River and the Sabie River, which supply much needed water to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. This leads to  an incredible diversity of wildlife.
Long-established safari practices
Secondly due to a long history of sensitive game-viewing over many decades, the animals are mostly relaxed allowing for fantastic game-viewing.
Unmatched leopard habituation
Most notably, the Sabi Sand, along with neighbouring Timbavati, is famous for its habituated leopard population. Most unusually, these have become accustomed to safari vehicles resulting in extraordinary close sightings. This is a unique feature of these game reserves ONLY. However, you will see all of the Big Five (elephant, leopard, lion, rhino and buffalo) whilst on safari here. As well as plenty of general game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sabi Sand better than Kruger National Park?
They offer different experiences. Sabi Sand provides guided safaris, fewer vehicles and closer sightings, while Kruger offers scale and self-drive exploration. Many travellers combine both.

How many nights should I spend in Sabi Sand?
We recommend a minimum of three nights to allow time for varied sightings and unrushed game drives.

Is Sabi Sand suitable for honeymooners?
Very much so. The reserve is ideal for honeymooners seeking privacy, exceptional guiding and high-quality lodge experiences.
