Finishing up this email at home in Canada with the temperature at -6 deg C and snow forecast, brrrr.
The trip was a great success, we went to interesting and beautiful places and met a lot of great people.
Laura and I feel we now understand more of the complexities and the issues that South Africa faces. The planning and selection of places to stay that you recommended all worked out well. And I have submitted several reviews to TripAdvisor. As I have been using this web site in my travel planning for a number of years and feel it is important to support those places where a significant effort by staff and management has been made to provide a good experience.
In the spirit of feedback I have a few points and comments for your consideration:
Rental car – with GPS
We found this very useful for the kind of trip we did, enabling us to detour easily from the planned itinerary. As an example we visited Vergelegen on our drive from Cederberg to Hermanus. And this would have been difficult without a GPS to assist us. That being said we did use your written directions as well!
We were very happy with Rouge on Rose as a Cape Town base and found the Bo Kaap area no problem to walk around with some good restaurants nearby. Climbing up Table Mountain via the 12 Apostles route was a challenge for us, and I highly recommend Stephanie of Hike Table Mountain as a guide. We found the following locations to be of high quality,Rouge on Rose, Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge,The Lily Pond Country Lodge, 8A Grahamstown, the Explorer Camp at Shamwari and the Cavern. In general we found the standard of hospitality and food in South Africa to be of a very high standard.
I was also impressed by ComAir the operator of British Airways, this was a good choice for the internal flights and we also had no problems with the rental car, although SA drivers make our Quebec drivers ( known to be fast and aggressive) look like senior citizens!
In the Drakensburg the Cavern has the most welcoming accommodation but Cathedral Peak has the most impressive scenery and walks. On balance I would return again to the Cavern. The talks and walks with Elsa Pooley, an activity at the Cavern on wild flowers was great
In closing thanks again to Cedarberg Africa and you Tash for arranging the bookings and being able to respond when delays in transportation became apparent. Again I have appreciated the significant effort that Cederberg Travel has put into your web information and the extra material on attractions provided with the itinerary.
I remain hopeful that the rains come soon to the Eastern Cape and Northern areas where the drought appears bad. Our Shamwari rangers were concerned about the lack of rain…
