Well we’ve been back home a week and my family is still buzzing after our South African adventure.
We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Firstly RockFig was a delight! The Rockfig venue was exceptional, and we had it to ourselves which made it very special. At this lodge, over the 3 days, we saw the big 5 including 9 Lions on a kill at very close range, sitting in the middle of a herd of 50 elephant, 20 Wild Dogs, Rhino. Hyena and 4 leopard. Among all the impala kudu nyala giraffe zebra and lots of bird life. It was amazing and the food, lodgings, staff and overall experience at Rockfig was exceptional. Each meal they set up at a different place and one was held in the wild around a camp fire. Very special.
Tanamara was great, once again the staff excellent, nice food and nice accommodation although a little older and probably due for a renovation, however we were well spoilt after Rockfig! The views from the balcony excellent and we would stay there again.
Reilly’s was an interesting place but very comfortable and peaceful and we were only here one night. Food again was great and we were well looked after. Swaziland was probably more effort than it was worth just getting across the border however we did a bit more sightseeing on the way out and probably should have tried to see a local family or something. Nevertheless we had a great time. They had dinner outside around the fire which was really nice.
Phinda was also exceptional. The staff were just incredible and we had ‘Lucky’ as our Ranger and he was excellent too. We saw 4 cheetah, Leopard, Elephant, Hyena, Hippo, Lion, Rhino and all the other animals – so again saw the big 5 plus Cheetah. We had an amazing outdoor dining experience on our first night and the food here was a step above everywhere else. Truly outstanding.
Finally Makakatana was a quieter sanctuary but we really enjoyed it too. The Ranger was informative and we saw a few different cats and other animals and bird-life with the highlight being the hippo on the boat cruise where we saw over 300 of them, and many out on the bank and walking around so that was worth that part of the trip if nothing else was. The food here was also excellent. Whilst a smaller group of guests (8 rooms max) they had a very good chef here.
The car hire worked smoothly, the flight excellent. We couldn’t fault a thing.
Thanks Conrad for your help organizing all of this trip for us, it was amazing – and I’ll be sure to refer you to any future friends of mine wishing to come to Africa.
