“I am so grateful to Conrad and Cedarberg Africa for helping us have the trip of a lifetime to South Africa!
I began investigating taking a family vacation to S Africa 7 months in advance, but wasn’t sure if we could afford it for our family of 5. I sent out several inquiries to different tour companies, and was disheartened to hear that my price point was too low OR we would have to stay in economy lodging. Conrad from Cedarberg was the ONLY tour company representative who not only told me he could arrange our trip for the amount I budgeted, but we would be staying in very nice accommodations. There is actually a nice blog post on the company website detailing how they are able to get better prices for lodging due to their relationships with the various places, and I am sure I never could have done our trip for less than what they did for us!
Conrad was very responsive to my emails and shared his expertise helping to craft our self drive itinerary. He sent a very impressive electronic itinerary complete with not just photos of the lodging but also google map since we were driving ourselves. He also shared ideas of what we could do along our self drive and very detailed written driving instructions and estimated driving times. I was initially a little worried doing all of this over the internet but the Cedarberg website is so well done with lots of helpful information and Conrad was very responsive so I ultimately trusted him.
I am so glad we used this travel agency! Everything went smoothly for us: Our initial impression when we landed at Cape Town after a very long travel day was so positive – there was a polite and friendly driver holding a sign with our name on it, he helped us get Rands from the ATM machine, and during our drive to our lodging told us a bit about Cape Town.
Our first lodging was incredible – a 3 bedroom / 3 bathroom luxury apartment in the Waterfront area with an incredible view of the harbor! We felt very safe with the gated keyed entry system and guard posts. The apartment was huge, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, free instant coffee and tea and within walking distance of all the restaurants / shops of the V&A Waterfront area.
Our second lodging was 1 night at La Plume Ostrich farm – old fashioned guest house was quaint, individual heaters in the bedrooms much appreciated in the winter! 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms – really convenient for family! Dinner and breakfast was included at the main house – candlelit affair with choice of appetizer, main dish, dessert plus help yourself to sides so really something for everyone. Best ostrich filet ever!
Our third lodging was Tsitsikamma Village Inn – this was the only place we had 2 separate rooms the whole trip, but they were right next to each other and worked fine for us. This was also very quaint lodging, each room had 1Q and 1 twin bed, individual heater, heated mattress cover (Fantastic!) and was right in the middle of Storms River Village with lots of choices for eating and activities. Breakfast was included and was fantastic full buffet with everything you could want including made to order eggs!
Our fourth lodging was Gondwana Private Reserve, we had an entire 4 bedroom / 4 bathroom bush villa – gigantic and when we pulled up there were antelope grazing in the side yard! The villa was beautiful, huge deck with amazing view of the mountains and sunset. In the morning Housekeeping would come in and open all the blinds, and while we were at dinner would close the blinds, turn on the heated towel racks and heated mattress covers, and leave us cookies and bookmarks with recipes. Wood was provided for the fireplace and there were space heaters in every bedroom which were much appreciated!
All the meals were included and were fantastic, cheese board / fresh breads / fruit every meal, full menu to order from for meal and dessert. 2 game drives daily and since it was winter they provided warm ponchos which were great, the guide was fantastic and amazing animals! The service was 5 star!
Our last lodging was Grootbos, and Conrad had told me this was his kids loved this and I know why. It is a National Geographic Lodge of Distinction and was the nicest place we have every (or probably ever will) stay! We had 2 adjoining rooms, one with a King bed, the other room with 3 twins (for our 3 kids) with personalized welcome notes for us. The rooms each had a bedroom and a sitting room with a Nespresso machine + frother, stocked minibar, wood fire place, deck looking out on the sunset, full bathroom with shower and bathtub. While we were at dinner housekeeping would start a fire in the fireplace, turn on the heaters, and place a hot water bottle in everyone’s bed! All the meals were included and were fantastic including 5 course dinners.
What made Grootbos so impressive though was the service – we didn’t realize we would have a guide assigned to us the whole time! When we arrived a in the late afternoon he met with us and talked about what activities we could consider. Since we had missed lunch they had the kitchen make us a cheese plate and fries without us asking and served us drinks. We didn’t have enough time to do everything so the guide helped us pick activities that would work. When one of the things we wanted to do didn’t work out due to the weather, he substituted a flower safari drive which was fascinating!
The day we checked out we were going to be flying out of Cape Town at night – I had arranged to do the Whale tour and asked if we could keep our luggage at the lodge for safe keeping. They went above and beyond – they drove us to / from the whale tour, we had lunch back at the lodge, AND they allowed us to freshen up before we left for Cape Town in a different room at the resort. They have a foundation dedicated to helping the local community which is so impressive, they even offer a tour of some of their foundation activities that would have been great to do if we had more time.
We truly had the trip of a lifetime – thanks to Conrad and Cedarberg Africa! Thank YOU!
