Schoone Oordt Country House review by Kate

What a beauty. I expected to be impressed and I was not disappointed. (I am a sucker for old Cape homesteads with lots of history.) The manor house has been immaculately restored to (probably now above) its former glory. There are 6 luxury rooms overlooking the lovely gardens which are very well appointed with very nice classical bathrooms and quite funky circular showers to glam it up a bit. All with fireplaces. The two standard rooms are exactly the same size – they just lack a fireplace – and share a veranda which opens onto a stretch of lawn instead of the flower gardens. (So they are a good option for people on a bit of a budget or for family or friends travelling together). The family room was very charming, in the old stable block, with a main bedroom and bathroom downstairs and a kids room upstairs on the mezzanine level.

The honeymoon suite was suitably private and luxurious but with much more focus on antique furniture so it may not suit everyone. (Personally I preferred the luxury suites.) They do dinners every night in summer but only selected nights in winter so I didn’t sample their dinner option but I liked the fact that there was a choice of 3 restaurants within very easy walking distance (<250 metres) of the lodge, and several more a short drive away. However the breakfast in their conservatory restaurant was delicious and distinctive and so that bodes well for the dinner. My bedroom was warm on arrival and the fire was lit, hot water bottle in bed when I returned from dinner. (This was August). Highly recommended!
