Malawi’s Rift Valley Explorer

Malawi is a small sliver of a country dominated by Lake Malawi, the most appealing of the great lakes of Africa. The ‘lake of stars’ is a magnificent sight. Its crystal clear waters are teeming with colourful fish. Plus its sandy beaches are a popular spot for relaxing after a Malawi safari in the Liwonde Game Reserves.

This tour showcases the very best that Malawi’s Rift Valley has to offer. The Great Rift Valley is a geographical and geological feature running 4,000 miles across the continent of Africa. The destinations here all fall along Malawi’s very scenic part of the Rift Valley.

You can experience the scenic vistas of the majestic Zomba Plateau, followed by a range of boat safaris, game drives and guided walks in Liwonde National Park. Your trip will end with a stay in Lake Malawi National Park, a World Heritage site.

Accommodation at a glance:

1 night at Heuglin’s Lodge (or a similar accommodation)
2 nights at Sunbird Ku Chawe Inn, Zomba Plateau
3 nigths at Mvuu Lodge, Liwonde National Park
3 nights at Mumbo Island Camp, Lake Malawi National Park

Tailor-made options:

You can combine this tour of Malawi with a safari in neighboring country Zambia. Or end with a few nights in Victoria Falls. The options are endless!

The Landscapes of Malawi Safari

Malawi is known as the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. Although not as rich in game as other African countries, the magic of Malawi lies in its glorious scenery. Then add in marvellously friendly and laid-back people, superb flora and bird life.

Malawi is the ideal destination for travellers who want to wander off the beaten track and enjoy an African experience that has not been tainted by mass-tourism. Further south are the main wildlife reserves of Malawi such as the scenic Liwonde National Park with its large herds of elephant. But this Landscapes of Malawi Safari ventures off the beaten track to explore the highlights of northern Malawi, offering you an opportunity to explore the country’s unique African montane highlands and pristine beaches.

Accommodation at a glance:

1 night at Luwawa Forest Lodge, north of Lilongwe, Full Board,
3 nights at Chelinda Lodge, Nyika National Park, Full Board & Game Activities
3 nights at Chintheche, northern lakeshore of Malawi, Full Board & selected Activities

Alley of Baobabs in Western Madagascar adventure

Adventurous Western Madagascar tour

This adventurous Western Madagascar tour is for those who love to explore remote off the beaten track places. To includes all the highlights of Western Madagascar: The Tsingy de Bemaraha, Baobab Alley, Kirindy and Morondava. And it includes a charming, if rustic river cruise down one of the most scenic rivers in the western part of Madagascar.

To see a reasonable spectrum of Madagascar’s endemic mammals, birds, reptiles and trees, you ideally need to visit a variety of climatic  and floral zones. So we love this combination of  Western Madagascar with the addition of the Eastern Rainforests of Andasibe. Or you can combine it with our Southern itinerary: Rainforests, Mountains and Beaches of Southern Madagascar.

Accommodation at a glance (From 9 nights up to 12 nights with Kirindy & 2 nights Andasibe)

Overnight Royal Palissande Hotel, Antananarivo, DBB

1 night Antsirabe, Couleur Bleu Guesthouse, DBB

1 night Princesse du Tsiribinhina, Miandrivazo, DBB

2 nights Tsiribinhina River Cruise, DBB

2 nights Orchidees de Bemaraha, DBB

Optional extra night at Relais de Kirindy

1 night, Morondava, Chez Maggie, DBB

1 night, Antananarivo at Palissandre or Lokanga Boutique Hotel

western Madagascar - baobab alley close to kirindy

Tailormake this tour

This tour works best with 10 nights with an extra night at Kirindy. But there are all sorts of ways to customize it.

  • Add a night in Kirindy (approx Euro 155 more per person)
  • Take out the night in Antsirabe if you need to save time
  • Add a 2 night extension to visit Andasibe National Park – see 12 night price below
  • Add on a few nights on the wonderful tropical island of Nosy Be

  • If the boat cruise sounds too rustic, you can travel north from Morondava and back again (But this is lots of driving!)
  • Or you can just visit the Avenue of Baobabs & the Kirindy Forest and not head all the way to the Tsingy of Bemaraha (3 nights plus Tana)
  • This latter itinerary can be combined with our 11 night Rainforests tour to make a 14 night itinerary
