Okavango Desert & Delta Rhino Safari

This 6 nights Okavango Desert & Delta Rhino Safari in Botswana combines 3 of the prime safari destinations of Botswana! The Okavango Delta, the Savute Channel in the Chobe National Park and the Kalahari Desert.

With fewer than sixty Rhinos left in Botswana’s National Parks, conservation efforts are critical, making the contribution from travellers booking the Rhino Package increasingly important. Thankfully, over the past few years a breeding rate of over 6% has been recorded, which is among the best ever achieved in Southern Africa. This safari offer includes a contribution towards the Botswana Rhino Relocation and Reintroduction Project helping in the effort to protect our Rhinos.

Day 1

Arrive Maun, Fly into Okavango Delta, 2 nights water camp, Camp Okavango or Xugana Island Lodge, Fully Inclusive

On arrival in Maun, you are met and transferred by light aircraft to Camp Okavango or Xugana Island Lodge for 2 nights. The Okavango Delta is Africa’s largest and most beautiful oasis – an isolated, lush green paradise with some of the richest wildlife in the world. It is a maze of waterways, lagoons, vast grassy plains and palm-fringed and wooded islands and is home to a wide array of animals and birds. At Camp Okavango, game viewing is predominantly by motorboat, as well as game walks with an experienced and armed guide on the delta’s islands. The evocative mokoro trips are in shallower waters, water levels permitting.

Camp Okavango is situated on a remote island in the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta ensuring a year-round water experience with boating, canoeing, guided bush walks and of course, excellent birding.

Camp Xugana is part of  the Xugana private concession – widely accepted as being the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta with the most fabulous sunsets. Camp Xugana,  situated on a wooded island abutting the lagoon, takes full advantage of this magnificent site with an open boma and an alfresco dining area facing an expanse of pristine water.

Day 3

Fly to Savute Channel, Chobe National Park, 2 nights Savute Safari Lodge, or Camp Moremi, Fully Inclusive

This morning, after a final game activity, you are transferred by light charter flight to Savute Channel, a rugged semi-arid wilderness region in the south-western part of Chobe National Park, famous for its excellent year-round game viewing. The channel began as an offshoot of the Linyanti River and its mysterious wet and dry cycles mould this region of Chobe. What was once a hippo-filled river is now open, particularly nutritious, grassland sustaining a marvellous array of animal and bird life. The summer rains (November to March) bring a feast for the predators, as thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest congregate on the marsh whilst undertaking the journey in search of life’s basic needs – water and food.

Savute Safari Lodge lies on the shores of the Savute channel, the ‘stolen river’. Here wild dogs hunt in the channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. Now it is known for its large herds of elephant and lion prides. The twelve contemporary en suite suites have spacious double volume interiors, large glass sliding doors and private viewing decks to provide the best views of the Savute plains.

Camp Moremi is shaded by giant ebony trees and overlooks the Xakanaxa Lagoon, in the heart of what is reputedly Africa’s most beautiful reserve – the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. The camp offers a diversity of habitat and animal life, which is unrivalled in Botswana. Here where the Okavango meets up with the vast Kalahari desert, ancient Mopane forests, open grassland and seasonal floodplains have formed. Trained resident naturalist guides will share their knowledge and deep love of the wilderness with you on game drives where sightings of wild dog, cheetah, leopard, lion, elephants and buffalo are possible.

Day 5

Fly back to Maun. Tranfer by road to Kalahari Desert, 2 nights Leroo La Tau, Fully Inclusive

This morning, after a final game activity, you are transferred by light charter flight back to Maun where you are met and transferred by road (1½ hours) to the dry Boteti river area on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to Leroo La Tau lodge where you spend the next couple of nights. At the start of the rainy season this desert area teems with wildlife as herds of wildebeest and zebra graze on the wide open grassland plains. During the wet season (Nov to March) there’s an influx of migratory birds. As the dry season begins, the pans dry out again and the game migrates back northwards via the dry Boteti river in search of waterholes to sustain them on their trek.

Leroo La Tau is built on the cliffs 15m above the dry Boteti river bed. In the dry season the wildlife concentrates around the waterhole in front of the lodge. The stylish lodge comprises 12 thatched chalets all en suite and well spaced out. The wood and thatch main building offers a lounge, dining area and open air bar.
