Gorilla Mountain Snapshot

This four day gorilla trekking safari will give you glimpse into the lives of the people of Rwanda. And a trek to see the mountain gorillas. Your first day is in Kigali.  Here you can  absorb the culture and history of Rwanda and prepare for the gorilla trekking tour. On the second day  you spend the morning on a city tour which includes the Genocide Museum . Then you head to Ruhengeri, the base for gorilla trekking at the Parc National des Volcans. (This is also known as the Volcanoes National park). This is a scenic journey through the lush terraced landscape of rural Rwanda.

You will spend the next two nights here at one of three lodges Gorilla Mountain View Lodge (Premier), Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (Luxury) or the amazing Bisate Lodge (Luxury). On the third day you start early for your gorilla trek. You are given a full briefing, assessed and put into small groups for the gorilla trek. This can take between two and six hours depending on the movements of the gorillas. And the number of rests and photo stops that you may need.

After the trek  you have lunch at the Lodge and then return to Kigali for overnight. As you travel south through the lush coffee, tea and banana plantations  you will really understand the epithet “Land of a Thousand Hills”.

Day 3

Volcanoes National Park – gorilla trekking

Early departure at 06:30 hours. Drive to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for registration where the park staff determines which group of gorillas you will visit.

The park staff discusses your fitness level and advises you of the trekking times and conditions to the various groups based upon their location in the park the previous evening. There are a total of 80 gorilla permits available each day with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting any one group.

Once the trekkers are put into groups, each group’s Lead Guide briefs the trekkers of the trekking procedures as well as the “do’s and donts” while in the presence of gorillas. After the briefing, trekkers return to their respective vehicles for the drive up the mountain to the starting point.

gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Porters may be hired for the trek to carry your backpack and gear; Cost, US$10 per person/per day. We advise that you utilize this service, either to help with the climb or to steady you in the mud!

Trekking can take from two to six or more hours if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them the next morning.  The guides stop frequently to allow trekkers a chance to rest and take photos along the way.

Have lunch at the lodge and then head back to Kigali. You drive south past coffee, tea and banana plantations on a breathtaking scenic drive to Kigali. Everything and everywhere there is sheer green hanging on the hills.

1 night Park Inn Kigalia (Mid-range/Premier) or Kigali Serena Hotel/The Retreat by Heaven (Luxury)

Note: Why not add another night?

We strongly recommend spending an extra night in the Volcanoes National Park so that you can enjoy one of the other treks that are on offer, such as the Golden Monkey trekking. Or perhaps a longer hike up to one of the high mountains (which requites a very good level of fitness).
