Wild Coast Meander

This unique Eastern Cape walking trail offers you the opportunity to walk a section of the magnificent Wild Coast – a nature lover’s paradise.

This is one of a number of  ‘slackpacking’ walking tours available in South Africa. These tours combine the excitement and enjoyment of a multi-day hike through beautiful countryside, but with the added comfort of accommodation and meals provided. And, as importantly, your luggage is transported to your overnight accommodation. So, all you have to carry is your daypack.

Itinerary

On the 5-night Wild Coast Meander, you will encounter long lonely beaches, river estuaries teeming with marine life, river fauna and majestic views. The trail covers a distance of 55km and offers some interesting and slightly challenging aspects. Prepare yourself for river crossings, hiking over headlands, beach walking and crossing the Kei River on a pontoon! However, overall the terrain is fairly easy with short distances travelled each day. Daily walking distance ranges from 6km up to one long day of 21km. You spend every night in comfort at one of the Wild Coast resort hotels. These are traditional 2 or 3 star hotels where you enjoy wonderful cuisine and warm hospitality. As the terrain is relatively easy, no great fitness is required. Guides and porters from local Xhosa communities accompany you every day, sharing their local knowledge, customs and culture with you.

There is also a second 5-night Sunshine Trail on offer. If you don’t have 5 nights for the Wild Coast Meander, you can also enjoy a shorter 2- or 3-night walk. This offers part of the longer trail. The price of the walking trail depends on the number of people. So, it’s most cost effective if you are at least 4 people.

Practicalities:

You can either drive to the starting hotel and leave your rental car there, or take a return transfer from East London Airport. The latter is usually the easier option.

Very important: Because the trail involves one night stays at each hotel, it is NOT offered during the South African Christmas and Easter holidays. During these times, the hotels like to take longer 5 or 7 night stays.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not book this  ‘slackpacking’ walking tour as a standalone service.
