View San (Bushmen) Rock Art

In addition to walking, the other main attraction of the Cederberg Mountains is the extensive collection of San rock art. Some of these artworks are still to be viewed in some of the mountain caves!

Follow a trail to some of the ancient rock paintings of the San people, the first inhabitants of South Africa. You can view these delicate paintings, flowing with movement and life, with no crowds to spoil your quiet enchantment. You are introduced not only to the life and culture of the San, but also to the natural beauty of their homeland.

The Cederberg is one of the best areas for ancient San (Bushmen) rock art in the world, with over 2,500 discovered sites, a number of which are easily accessible. There are some excellent examples of rock art at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve. And also near Clanwilliam on the Sevilla Rock Art Trail.

Similarly in the Drakensberg Mountains, there are some particularly good examples in the Giants Castle Nature Reserve as well as Kamberg. The closest lodge is Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse.

Other good areas for viewing Bushmen Rock Art is the Matobo National Park in southern Zimbabwe. And, the Twyfelfontein rock engravings or Brandberg mountain in Damaraland, Namibia.
