Township cycling tour in Cape Town

These community-based bicycle tours in Cape Town are a responsible take on township tours. They provide you with many more opportunities to interact with the community than from an air-conditioned bus. So, experience the lifestyle of a large section of the South African population on this interactive cultural township tour!

You are met at your hotel and transferred to the community. Then you start the tour on bicycle through the township of Masiphumelele. This township cycling tour has been run in conjunction with BEN (Bicycle Empowerment Network) since 2002. BEN is a bicycle non-profit organisation that imports second-hand bikes. It also trains bike mechanics and assists entrepreneurs to operate bicycle shops in communities.

A local guide will take you round the township, visiting interesting places and explaining some local Xhosa customs. You might even learn how to click like a Xhosa! During school time, you visit a local crèche where the teachers work under very difficult circumstances. Indeed, part of the tour proceeds go towards the betterment of their facilities. A highlight of the tour is to visit a local Sangoma (traditional healer) who performs interactive dancing and drumming. Then, lunch is at a local African restaurant. Or, at the home of a local lady who treats you to an authentic African tea or lunch in her home.

Note: Please note that we don’t arrange these cycling tours as stand-alone activities. Only as part of a tailor-made holiday booked with Cedarberg Africa.
