Mozambique Holiday Ideas
This ‘land of smiles’ is synonymous with long sandy beaches, warm tropical water, relaxed ambience and delicious Portuguese cuisine. With its white, palm-fringed beaches and coral reefs, the easy vibe of Mozambique appeals to all, especially honeymoon couples. It offers the ultimate in ‘barefoot luxury’ beach retreats.
To holiday here is to enjoy an exotic mix of different cultures. Along with Tanzania and Kenya, Mozambique was an important staging post on the Arab trade routes. So it offers the same Swahili cultural and historical influences. But its period of Portuguese administration has meant that the country has a very different flavour from former British and German colonies. It’s more relaxed and unhurried!
Mozambique Beaches & Diving
Of course the best known asset of this country is its fabulous beaches.
Top Mozambique destinations include tropical island retreats on Bazaruto and Benguerra islands and the Quirimbas Archipelago. These provide luxurious and tranquil surroundings, with great diving and snorkelling. Whilst the mainland resorts near Inhambane, Vilanculos are also popular with keen divers.
There is excellent diving all the way up the coast from White Pearl through to the Quirimbas. So check out our page on Mozambique diving for more details.
Finally sports fishing is also a big drawcard with many resorts offering deep sea fishing excursions to rival the best of the Indian Ocean islands.
Mozambique Honeymoon Ideas
- Combine a safari in the Kruger National Park with a few days at a Mozambique beach resort
- Most resorts offer honeymoon and long stay offers
- If you’re a budget, consider an adventurous self-drive in Southern Mozambique combining the Kruger National Park with a Southern resort such White Pearl Resorts or Machangulo Beach Lodge…
What’s the best time to visit Mozambique?
Mozambique is almost a year-round destination. But January to February are typhoon season with strong winds. The winter temperatures (from June to August) are pleasantly warm but not scorching hot. So this suits some people. But if you know you like to be roasting, then we suggest heading here in the spring or autumn months.
Flight Access to Mozambique
Most of our clients combine a Kruger safari with a few days relaxing on the beach in Mozambique.
There are daily flights from Johannesburg or thrice-weekly flights direct from the Kruger Park to Vilanculos (for the Bazaruto and Benguerra Islands). If heading north, there are daily flights to Pemba (for the Qurimbas islands) as well as to Inhambane.
Our more intrepid clients can also enjoy a self drive combining the Kruger National Park with Southern Mozambique. So you can enjoy a beach resort south of Maputo or northwards at Tofu, Barra or just north of Inhambane. However this is not for the faint-hearted as the roads are not in great condition. See Adventurous self-drive…
