Overview

  • Selous Impala Camp has excellent river setting in a game-rich part of the Selous
  • Authentic and comfortable tented camp
  • Range of game-viewing activities – game drives, boating, walking & fishing

Selous Impala Camp is set on the banks of the Rufiji River in one of the richest game areas in Tanzania. This relaxed, open-plan camp in a wooded area of the Selous Game Reserve gives you a chance to see lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, warthog, kudu, impala and a huge variety of birdlife, usually on 4x4 game drives, boat trips and bush walks, but sometimes without even leaving the camp! The simple yet stylishly furnished sitting and dining areas of Selous Impala Camp are raised on wooden decks overlooking the river so that you can see game as it comes down to the river to drink. Nearby the bar is made from an old mokoro (dug-out canoe).

Accommodation

Selous Impala Camp has been refurbished with eight new luxury Meru style tents which are spread over a large area, each set on high wooden decking with spacious verandas giving magnificent views of the river and forest beyond. Each has large beds with African fabrics, ceiling fan, electric lighting, safe and writing desk. The en suite facilities include a flush toilet and power shower. There are two family tents and a swimming pool at the camp. In addition, the camp has a family unit comprising two tents on one wooden deck. The camp has solar power and the tents have a USB charging point rather than power sockets.

Other activities at Selous Impala Camp include fishing on the river and perhaps a night or two of fly-camping. Cool off in the pool in the heat of the day. Selous Impala Camp is the sister camp to the more rustic Mdonya Old River Camp in the Ruaha National Park.

Fly-camping at Selous Impala Camp

Fly-camping is a wonderful complement to the existing range of activities on offer at Selous Impala Camp. Arranged as an extra activity (at an extra cost), not only does fly-camping allow guests to get up close and personal to the game, it is ideal for families, couples and friends to spend some quality time in a more private setting.

The term "Fly camping" comes from the early days of hunting safaris where you would spend several successive nights in a different location each night. Each person would carry their own basic equipment; consisting of a tent, fly sheet and little else to keep things practical. Nowadays fly-camping is usually from one location base, but still providing the same intimate experience of sleeping out in the bush away from distractions, but on a slightly grander scale. Accommodation is simple but comfortable. A safe haven in the form of a canvas cocoon is what separates you from the surrounding wildlife, whilst providing that same thrill of being out in the wild, literally.
