Overview

  • Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants of the V&A Waterfront
  • The Portswood is a relaxed, friendly hotel with a gentle nautical theme
  • Enjoy Cape Malay cuisine at the Quarterdeck restaurant
  • Well-appointed rooms have all the modern amenities that you’ll need

The 4 star Portswood Hotel in the V&A Waterfront of Cape Town is part of Cape Town's colonial history. The restaurant and lobby are built over the original well and holding cells for prisoners en-route to Robben Island some 300 years ago! However today the Portswood acts as an oasis of calm and comfort. Alongside the cosmopolitan nightlife of the Waterfront with its cafes, jazz bars and craft shops. And is known for its personal friendly service. The hotel offers all the convenience of being in the Waterfront and yet it is slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the working Cape Town harbour.

Accommodation

The 102 rooms at the Portswood are a little old fashioned – you are paying for its location not its rooms – but all have air-conditioning, satellite television, minibar, telephone, tea/coffee facilities and a full bathroom with bath and shower. The rooms are comfortable and practical. But if you like to lounge around in your hotel room, they are lacking in character.

However the Portswood makes a great base in the heart of Cape Town if you like to be out and about during the day. Guests staying here are welcome to use the gymnasium, sauna and steam room of its sister hotel, The Commodore Hotel, which is literally next door.

The Quarterdeck Restaurant specializes in Cape Malay cooking, the traditional cuisine of Cape Town, alongside some more conventional dishes. It's a relaxed yet elegant restaurant, uniquely housed in the old Convict Station which is now a National Monument. This is probably one of the best restaurants in Cape Town for this type of authentic cooking. We recommend it if you want to sample some hometown cuisine.
