Mchenja Bush Camp

CEDARBERG RATING

Premier

Overview

  • Offers limited day and night drives & not too strenuous walking
  • A welcome swimming pool at the camp - rare for Luangwa bush camps
  • Luxurious and stylish, the ideal end to your walking safari

Mchenja Bush Camp (meaning ‘ebony’) is a charming and romantic seasonal camp in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. It is beautifully situated beneath a magnificent grove of ebony trees overlooking a sweeping bend on the banks of the Luangwa River. Each of the five unique octagonal tents has their own en suite bathroom complete with river views as well as outside showers.

The elegant central chitenje (meaning lounge) is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees and comprises a bar, lounge and dining area under thatch. Brunch is sometimes enjoyed under the canopy of magnificent trees. Dinner is usually served on the river bank under the African stars. Most unusually for a bush camp there’s a small plunge pool close to the bar for cooling off during the hot midday hours of Zambia.

Mchenja Safari Activities

The game activities of Mchenja Bush Camp are a mix of walking safaris and game drives. You can decide each day if you want to venture out on foot or with the vehicle. The game viewing in this area is superb and night drives are usually very worthwhile. Walking safaris are not strenuous and are conducted at a pace determined by you but usually last 3 to 4 hours. They are led by a fully qualified guide and armed game scout.

Each of the four Bush camps owned by Time & Tide Safaris are designed to be very different in style with different habitats so that the ideal thing is to combine the camps, perhaps walking from one camp to another. You leave early in the morning and arriving at the next camp for brunch to find your bags already waiting for you.

Knowledgeable staff

"Our Norman Carr safari (Luwi, Nsolo and Kakuli) was outstanding. Brilliant team within each camp and really excellent food. Our guides and scouts were the best and most knowledgeable of any of our trips to southern Africa. Each camp had its own character and we loved the different “rooms” "
