Matemwe Lodge

CEDARBERG RATING

Overview

Vibrant yet relaxed Matemwe Lodge, one of the first in Zanzibar, has perfected the tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind.

Accommodation

Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious chalets at Matemwe Lodge has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. Two of the chalets have plunge pools.

Activities at Matemwe

Matemwe Lodge also offers a wide range of activities including kayaking, snorkelling and diving around the Mnemba atoll and a large variety of Spa treatments. Take a refreshing dip in the multi-level swimming pool or lie back on one of the lounge chairs with a freshly made cocktail from the poolside bar and enjoy the wonderful views of the ocean. Take a leisurely walk around the reef, explore the village or if you're looking for something extra special, how about a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow? Get involved with the local community with a cultural village visit. Most of the guides are from the local communities and are only too keen to share their homesteads, knowledge and traditions with you.

Dining

The open-air restaurant at Matemwe Lodge overlooks the ocean and has a tranquil area to lounge in as well. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavors. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options.
