Karkloof Safari Spa is a luxurious spa retreat lies in KwaZulu Natal’s Midlands on 3500 hectares of beautiful countryside abundant with wildlife, making it Africa’s largest destination spa. We recommend it either at the start or end of your African safari for a few days so that you can truly relax.
Karkloof Safari Spa has 16 individually decorated villas, all of which feature private viewing decks, spacious bathrooms with bath and shower, separate sitting room with satellite TV, complimentary internet access, under floor heating, air conditioning and complimentary mini bars as well as espresso machines.
The Karkloof Spa
The world class Spa is definitely the highlight of the Karkloof Retreat, featuring no less than 17 airy treatment rooms. Two are couples rooms, all with wonderful views over native bush. Manicure/pedicure rooms, Rassoul, Flotation Tank, Kneipp pools, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms are part of the wellness clinic. You may enjoy unlimited spa treatments throughout your stay at Karkloof with a spa plan tailored to your needs.
Its eco-design incorporates natural materials with thatch and ‘living’ roofs – soil and planting on top where small animals can graze, walkways made of recycled wood and natural materials like glass, sandstone, terracotta and stone.
Other activities at Karkloof Safari Spa
The ‘problem‘ is that you will be torn between hanging out for hours at the Spa and enjoying some of the other activities on the estate. They include game viewing, walking, hiking, mountain biking, birding, or just relaxing in your own secret spot. Whether you settle into the deck overlooking the valley or lounge at the heated pool the pervading feeling is oneness with nature.
There are no predators at Karkloof which means that the animals are relaxed and happy to be viewed at close quarters. We enjoyed a bush breakfast with a group of very inquisite giraffe who ambled quite close to check on us – a memorable experience.
Given the lack of predators, you should see Karkloof for what it is – a destination spa with some game-viewing on the side, rather than as a game reserve. However its game-viewing is an excellent compliment to a Big Five reserve elsewhere, allowing you a second safari experience.
Karkloof’s rather extraordinary motto is to do ‘what you want, when you want’. So meals are available at any time of day. Local fare is freshly prepared and set to satisfy the discerning gourmand in search of health, indulgence or simplicity. Local farms bordering the area are a source of many of the ingredients like organic avocados and game meat. Expert chefs are well briefed in healthy cuisine including food intolerances and specialist diets. Friendly staff members are on hand to whip up a cocktail, cappuccino or suggest a local or foreign wine from the well stocked cellar. Similarly you are assigned a ranger at the start of your stay who suggests activities to combine with your spa treatments, again at whatever time suits you. If you don’t want to go out for a morning game drive at 6am, but prefer 8am, no problem…
