Chitabe Camp

CEDARBERG RATING

Overview

  • Focus on land activities with game drives, walks and birding
  • Island location
  • Good concentrations of elephant buffalo, lion, leopard and cheetah
  • Known for its wild dog sightings
  • Sleep out in the elevated hides

Chitabe Camp lies in its own private 28,000 ha concession on one of the most beautiful islands in Botswana. It lies in a prime location in the south-east of the Okavango delta and is commonly seen as a ‘Moremi’ camp because it focuses on land-based activities. This mainly forested area nevertheless has an incredible variety of habitats, including waterways, marshland, dry acacia and mopane woodland and riverine areas. Chitabe Camp itself is as stunning as the area, offering eight spacious East African-style tents built on elevated wooden decks. The en suite tents, all under a cool canopy of indigenous trees, are linked to the main lodge buildings by raised wooden walkways. The thatched dining area, bar and lounge lead out onto open decks with superb views across the floodplain and a pool allows you to cool off during the daytime heat of the Okavango Delta.

Being just south of the Moremi Game Reserve, Chitabe focuses on land activities - bush walks (on request), day and night 4x4 game drives and spectacular bird-watching. The varied habitats surrounding Chitabe Camp create an abundance of wildlife - major attractions include good populations of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and cheetah. It's also known for its wild dog. Given it's in its own private concession, night drives are possible and provide opportunities to see nocturnal species such as civet, serval, genet, pangolin and aardwolf.

Chitabe Lediba

Chitabe Lediba is a smaller camp on the other side of the same island. With only five tents it offers an intimate experience, ideal for groups of friends or families. There's a dining area, lounge and swimming pool with a glorious view over the small lediba (an old lagoon that's become a waterhole) so that you view wildlife coming to drink from the camp itself. All five Meru-style tents are built on raised decks with luxurious interiors and in tasteful style. En-suite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers with panoramic views of the Okavango Delta. Its two family tents have two en suite bedrooms connected either by the deck (for older kids) or an indoor corridor for younger ones.

Given that activities focus on game drives and walks, we recommend that you combine Chitabe Camp or Chitabe Lediba with a more watery camp in the Okavango Delta - offering mokoro and boating - to get the best of all worlds.
