Tongabezi Lodge is situated on a sweeping bend of the Zambezi river, facing west toward the sunset, 18 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. The lodge has open expansive views of the river and has a wild, romantic feel. You choose between one of the five Houses or one of the six cottages.
The Houses at Tongabezi are furnished with local Zambian materials and designed with romance and indulgence in mind. Dominating each house is the huge, king-size bed. Sweeping views over the Zambezi River are also a feature with each house completely open to the front affording superb river views and sounds. Your private balcony overlooking the river is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner under the African stars, or you can choose to dine with other guests on one of the river decks.
Honeymoon House was the first but it has now been joined by the equally romantic (though slightly unfortunately named) Bird House, Tree House and Dog House. Great attention has been paid to the bathrooms: a special feature is the huge open-air sunken bath.
Five expansive River Cottages are situated along the river bank of Tongabezi Lodge. Each has a large double bed or two singles, mosquito net, en suite bath and shower, and a terrace for relaxing, dining and enjoying the idyllic Zambezi River views. The cottages are not open-fronted and much more conventional in style. The garden cottage as a second bedroom annexe and therefore doubles as a family room sleeping four.
Tongabezi's public areas are decorated in earthy African style and include an open air bar, sitting area, dining area. However, dining is usually outside on one of the river decks. Dining tends not to be communal unless requested which often suits honeymooners. The swimming pool is landscaped into a rock face and there are two grass tennis courts and a croquet lawn. There's also a private Tsala for massages or private dinners.
Inclusive activities at Tongabezi include guided tours to Victoria Falls, canoeing on the Zambezi River, boating to a deserted island for a picnic lunch, private candlelit dinners on a sanpan floating on the Zambezi under the stars, bird walks, river cruises, game drives, and local Zambian village visits.
You may like to combine a couple of nights at Tongabezi Lodge with a night or two at its more rustic, but equally romantic sister camp, Sindabezi Island. Sindabezi sleeps only ten people in five open-fronted thatched chalets dotted around the shores of the island. The island is very rustic in style with no electricity, wood fires and hot bucket showers on demand.
