Reasons to visit Victoria Falls
Helicopter flips over Victoria Falls
The helicopter flips over Victoria Falls allow you to immediately gain a full perspective on the length and majesty of the falls. You are collected from your hotel and can choose between a 15 or 30 minute flight. The 15 minute flight focuses on the falls alone. You swoop over the Zambezi River and hover over the thundering Falls for a perfect photographic opportunity. The 30 minute option continues down the Zambezi river to view game on the river banks and in the National Park.
Visit Livingstone Island
Livingstone Island lies perched on the very edge of Victoria Falls in the midst of this thundering mass of water, and is about as close as you can imagine to the Falls. Dr Livingstone first viewed the Mosi-oa-Tunya ('the Smoke That Thunders') from Livingstone Island. You can choose between a breakfast, morning, lunch or afternoon visit to the island. The excursion begins with a thrilling boat journey through the channels of the Zambezi. On arrival you are taken on a guided island tour learning about its long history. You have amazing photographic opportunities to take shots of the Victoria Falls from this extraordinary angle and the very intrepid can even take a heart-stopping peek over the island's edge to the churning mass below. Afterwards, you relax under the shade of the canopied dining area for refreshments. If you are keen on a swimming experience like no other, you can even brave the waters of the Zambezi in the island's very own bathing pool, which forms each year amongst the rocks on the edge of the Falls. (Note: only available in the lower flow months only)
Elephant Back Safaris
Elephant Back Safaris are available in various locations, adjacent to the Kruger National Park, along the Garden Route of South Africa and also at Victoria Falls on the banks of the Zambezi river. The exact format differs slightly but usually you begin with a safety briefing and a general orientation. You interact with the elephants whilst the guide gives an informative talk on the African elephant and its relationship with man. Afterwards you meet the elephants and their handlers and begin the elephant back safari. What is so magical is that you understand so much more about elephant behaviour from this experience, seeing the constant forage for food, hardly hearing the elephant’s footsteps and appreciating just how nimbly such huge animals can move. You will view game in a completely different way as the wildlife views you as part of the natural environment and not an interloper. The elephant back safaris close to the Kruger traverse the open grassland plains, whereas at Victoria Falls, the elephant back safari winds through riverine bush and shallow parts of the Zambezi River onto the islands of the Zambezi river.
Royal Livingstone Express Steam Train
The Royal Livingstone Express is a unique dining experience utilising a restored steam train to recreate the ambience of a bygone era. The five carriages have been restored by Rovos Rail and thus offer air-conditioned comfort and style. Before departing you’re able to take photos of the train ‘in steam’. On boarding you have drinks and canapés in the lounge as the train travels through the Mosi-o-Tunya National Park where you may be lucky to see some game. After the park, the steam locomotive moves to the other end of the train, giving you wonderful views of the steam train in action before a five course dinner is served.
White Water Rafting on the Zambezi river
Full day (from mid January to mid July) and half day (July to mid January) white water rafting excursions are offered in the Lower Zambezi gorge. After a safety briefing, you head down into the gorge where you enjoy some of the most exciting white-water rapids in the world with an experienced rafting guide. In between the rapids, you have time to enjoy the breathtaking gorge scenery. On the full day excursion you enjoy lunch on the banks of the river. A strenuous climb out of the gorge marks the end of the day's activity before being transferred back to Livingstone where you can see the video screening of your trip.
