Tafika Camp lies in the far northern part of the South Luangwa National Park and is owned and run by locals, John and Carol Coppinger. Their safari company, Remote Africa Safaris, also operates three walking safari camps. Tafika is one of the more rustic, and yet one of the most appealing camps, as it focuses on giving you an all round Zambian bush experience. The camp itself is just outside South Luangwa Park, but a mere 5 minute drive to the Nsefu sector on the one side and a canoe trip straight across the river from the camp to walk in the park. Game walks and day and night drives can be even be trumped with an optional, but exhilarating, microlight flight over the valley (usually about 15 mins) with John Coppinger at the helm.
Six reed and thatch chalets, each with two double beds, overlook the Luangwa River in a remote area of the park. In addition there is a family chalet with a king size bed in one bedroom and two double beds in the other bedroom with a shared bathroom. Children of 12 years and over are allowed to particpate in the walking safaris. However children under 12 years are welcome at Tafika subject to prior arrangement and there are child discounts if younger children share with their parents.
There is also a hide overlooking a small waterhole. 220v recharging is possible with adaptors available for all types of plugs.
The transfer from Mfuwe Airport to Tafika is 2 hours and partly takes the form of a game drive through the South Luangwa and the adjacent Game Management Area (GMA). You can also opt to fly to Tafika’s local airstrip at Lukuzi airstrip (10 minute flight) which is just 10 minutes drive from the camp. This is offered at an extra cost and can be taken one way or both ways.
Many people staying at Tafika also spend a few nights at one of Remote Africa’s bushcamps which focus exclusively on walking - either Chikoko and Crocodile camp. Other unique adventures include river safaris for birding adventurers during the glorious rainy season when other camps are closed.
