Reasons to visit South Luangwa Park
Walking Safaris in the South Luangwa
Walking safaris were pioneered in South Luangwa National Park and it still sets the pace. You can opt to do morning bush walks from the camp or take a walking safari of several days. Morning bush walks usually last 3-4 hours with a light breakfast in the bush. These are not arduous but rather gentle explorations of the bush, giving you the opportunity to observe the game at close quarters and gain fascinating insights into the ways of the wild - a magical experience. Typically you focus on the smaller wildlife, the birds, the plants and their local medicinal uses and you’ll find yourself tracking spoor to identify different animals. Sometimes you’ll also encounter larger wildlife so your guide is always alert and ready. However for me the attraction lies in the overwhelming sense of being an active part of the bush and not just viewing it from a stationary vehicle. Many of our clients stay at bush camps which specialise in walking safaris such as Bilingmungwe or Nsefu. Three safari operators, Robin Pope Safaris, The Bushcamp Company and Norman Carr Safaris have several bushcamps and typically we would recommend two or three bush camps to enjoy the different terrain (which in turn attracts diverse wildlife.) The final option is to take a walking safari of several days staying in fly camps and walking each day, accompanied by some of the finest guides in Africa. Robin Pope Safaris offer several such mobile safaris through the dry season with set departure dates. These are extremely popular and sell out very rapidly so contact us to discuss your interests. The ideal time for a walking safari is probably late July to mid September. In July it will be cool in the mornings but you’ll be able to walk in comfort for hours if you wish. By mid September, it will be warm as you leave the camp early and you’ll typically be quite hot by the time you finish your walk at 10.30 or 11am.
Safari Houses of Zambia
Zambia offers a number of safari houses – luxurious self contained homesteads which your group of friends or family party take as one unit. The lodge usually comes with its own ranger so that you have a private vehicle for your game drives and a private chef, sometimes even a house-keeper or butler as well. As you can imagine this leads to a relaxed and flexible safari. Three favorites of ours are Chongwe River House in the Lower Zambezi National Park, Luangwa Safari House on the edge of the South Luangwa National Park and Tangala House near to the magnificent Victoria Falls.
