• One of South Luangwa’s most charming & romantic bush camps
Mchenja Camp is one of the more charming and romantic of South Luangwa's bush camps. It is the flagship bush camp of Norman Carr Safaris, one of the oldest safari operators in the South Luangwa National Park, which was begun by the legendary Norman Carr, one of the pioneers of game conservation in Zambia. Norman Carr Safaris operates Mchenja as well as Kapani Safari Lodge in the central South Luangwa and three other bush camps, Luwi, Nsolo and Kakuli. Each of the bush camps is designed to be different in style with different habitats (and therefore varied game) so that the ideal is to combine the camps, perhaps walking from one camp to another.
Mchenja Camp is the most luxurious and stylish of the seasonal bush camps which is lovely situated on the Luangwa River. Five walk-in safari tents nestle under a grove of ancient ebony trees and overlook a huge sweeping bend the Luangwa River. There is a bar, lounge and dining area under thatch, although most meals are enjoyed under the canopy of the magnificent trees. Each of the five unique octagonal tents has their own private en suite open air bathroom with free standing Vitorian baths with a special river view. The elegane central chitenje is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees. There's a small plunge pool for cooling off during the Zambian hot midday hours.
The game activities of Mchenja Camp are a combination of 4x4 game drives (limited) and bush walking. Walking safaris are not strenuous and are conducted at a pace determined by you but usually last 3 to 4 hours. They are led by a fully qualified guide and armed game scout. Usually you begin with a night or two at Kapani Safari Lodge, to enjoy 4x4 day and night drives. Then you head into the more remote areas on a leisurely game drive to stay at 2 or 3 walking camps. Given that Mchenja is the most luxurious of the bushcamps, it is ideal as the end of a walking safari if you are combining more than one Zambian bush camp.
